We also rode bicycles, and we put cards on the spokes for noise. Lol.
Our home was on the corner lot, and there was a city lamp post there. All these many years later, I can hear my mother calling out to me after dark to come in.
My daddy cooked on the grill during the warm months. He also made homemade vanilla ice cream often.
Fond memories for sure.
@Tissyanne I remember many of the things you spoke of here. But, I grew up in a neighborhood of boys so I played baseball, kickball, and dodgeball. There was an older lady that lived near us and every summer her granddaughter would come and stay for a month or so. One day we decided to have a rock throwing contest - throwing from the end of the driveway towards the house. Little did I know at that time I could throw that far. One throw and right through a window my rock went.
My bike always had streamers and sometimes cards on the spokes. The summer when I graduated from training wheels I still hadn't grasped the idea or the how to put on the brakes. When I would get to the end of the street I would jump off the bike, run home, and tell that the bike was laying in the intersection or across the street. I wasn't allowed to cross the street myself. But, when I did get the hang of it I got a brand new bike. It was turquoise. I was so happy that I knew how to ride and stop that I would pedal up and down the street laughing like Woody Woodpecker over and over again. I am sure it was annoying to our neighbors but they never said a word.
There was the summer when I was very young that I was signed up to take swimming lessons. I hated getting in the pool and going underwater and all the kicking. I decided I would hang out in the changing room and just take a shower to appear wet before going home. It didn't help that the manager of the swimming pool was our neighbor. He was quick to tell my parents that I was absent from lessons.
No matter how hot and humid it was we played outside. We didn't have air conditioning so you didn't notice the difference.
Since I have a summer birthday all the boys were invited. When it came to singing Happy Birthday I would cry. I guess I didn't like the attention on me.
A lot of my memories come from summer and there are many more I could share but the post would be way too long.
