At my age, I learned a very long time ago, there will always be someone with more money or more expensive clothing than I have. So I try and present myself as best I can and enjoy the moment.

The very wealthy have just as many health problems social problems and issues with self esteem. That's why I have no problem socializing with people of all socioeconomic groups. In the end, nobody can make you feel "less than" unless you allow them.

Re: Engagement Parties

[ Edited ]

Having many friends of different income levels, I can feel comfortable anywhere. Not a problem, and yes ladies look at each other on appearances. Some good some not so good. I have to say I have had my “what was she thinking” moments as I’m sure some have wondered the same of me. As I stated it is not a big deal to me. I wear what is appropriate for the occasion and enjoy myself.

Despite all the judgement or arrogance of some others at the party, I do hope you had a nice time.

I live in So Ca where a lot of that goes on - We have our own clothing trends and of course the figures are scrutinized so that is why many are insecure about themselves.  Don't know where that will all end up.

I was invited to a family members engagement party and my married daughter who was also invited went with me.  It was held mid afternoon and many of the female guests were dressed in semi formal attire.  The party was exquisite, arranged by a party planner and catered; I have been to weddings that were not this formal. There were about 150 people at the home of the brides parents.  They are well to do as is the grooms parents so obviously money is not an issue. I found it interesting watching many of the females present as they looked up and down at eachother appraising their clothes, bodies ?????  The life of the rich, not my cup of tea.  LOL

Obviously, I don't know any of these people, and wasn't there, but any time I go where women are well-dressed, I am always checking out their outfits.

Always looking for interesting ways women put themselves together.

I hope you had a good time.

I can tell the difference between a judgy look and an admiring look.

So can I.

It sounds like a nice party. As for other women being judgmental on the outfits of other party goers, it could just be your perception. Maybe others felt differently. It's all in one's point of view.

It sounds like the wedding will be very nice as well. Just try to enjoy and not overthink it.

ITA ....  It's not just well-to-do women who check out others' outfits.

Even women with little extra cash do so.

So what?

I am baffled by that claim ....  which originally came from a Bon Jovi song, I believe.

Maybe this is a thing in New Jersey?

Do YOU dress to impress other women?  I sure don't.

I am always checking out others' outfits and I always compliment the wearers. You can tell when someone put some thought into an outfit or when someone just has good style. I get some of my best ideas for dressing by looking at what other's wear.

I've gotten the look up and down too and if they are judging me, I don't know anything about it. It does make my day though, when someone appreciates my look and says so!

@Tinkrbl44.  I never heard the Bon Jovi song but I believe this theory was around long before he was.  I don't dress to impress anyone or go anyplace where there are people to impress, but many women do.

Thank you ladies for sharing your thoughts. I am sorry that I did not do a good job explaining myself . I found the "looks" amusing, especially since I am not in their age range.  You should have been there to see the look on the face of a gal whose ex was there with his very date who was 3/4 naked. LOL   I was quite comfortable in my attire and have long ago become confident and comfortable in my style and appearance.  I always recieve complements in my attire, including complements at the engagement party.  I wore a pair of dress black pants, a red sweater with rhinestones going down the sleeves and a pair of black silky flats with rhinestone bows and felt very comfortable and appropriately dressed.

Yes, the wedding will be quite beautiful. The bride to be,  ( my future granddaughter-in-law) showed me a picture of her wedding dress and it is stunning. The wedding isn't until 2026 due to both are still in college.

I did have a good time at the party. My comment that I was glad I wasn't rich and famous was meant to be humorous.  That is the problem with texting ( to me) is that the tone of ones conversation is lost.

Have a great day and Happy New Year!!!
