Rotten attitudes from employees should not be tolerated. I do not even know if they should get another chance. Accusing a customer of shoplifting is reprehensible. That employee should have been fired. No one should have to put up with such awful attitudes. If you do,not like your job get the he-- out!

I have worked retail and managed a few stores as well, and the number of programs put into place just to control "employee" fraud is disheartening. Based on what the OP has told us here, it sounds like the cashier WAS running a scam, and potentially with the knowledge and collusion of that particular manager. Do not tell me an employee cannot get cash back on a credit card transaction without being caught. They absolutely can, and have many, many times in the past. That is why so many checks and balances are in place "looking over the shoulders" of retail employees these days. No system is foolproof however, and certainly not if a manager/key holder is in on the scam. 1) Why did this cashier find it necessary to come over and butt right in when she saw this customer? That is not normal behavior for a busy cashier with no guilt on their minds. 2) Why on earth would a manager ask for a customer to go home and get statements or proof to bring back to him? I have never heard of such unless said manager was hoping that customer would just say to heck with it and/or forget or not come back. Something stinks here because the behavior of more than one employee is distinctly suspicious.

I live within 1.4 miles of a Sam's Club and a Walmart. If I travel the other direction in 21 miles I have another Sam's and Walmart.
I have not been in a Sam's or a Walmart in 12 years. I will not provide either with my hard-earned money.

I have never ever ever had a problem returning anything at either WM or Sam's. I have always been treated exceptionally well and with respect. Around here, they do it right.

@Lostandscared $54. For Halloween candy is a lot of money! You must have a lot of trick or treaters!
Since you bought too much this year, maybe next year you could do something different. I remember passing out silver quarters, comic books from my son's store (that I proofed first), trading cards, etc.
There are bags of spiders, and small toys at the dollar stores. If you have leftovers they will be good next year.
The kids don't need candy and you will save money.
Or turn your porch light off!

I think she said $24, not $54.
And candy is a big part of Halloween. No, kids don't "need" it. But I've never known a child that wouldn't have been disappointed with quarters or a fake spider. It's one time a year, and for many kids it's the only time their parents are more lenient about sweets and treats. Why deprive them of that?
It didn't sound to me as though the OP was looking to save money or that she would want to turn off her lights to avoid trick-or-treaters. She obviously was all in for Halloween, and just wanted to be properly credited for a return.

WalMart is hardly a good corporate citizen. As another poster mentioned, they blow into town and run other small shops out of business. They treat their employees badly, and their stingy wage scale and scheduling practices leave their workers to rely on food stamps, rent assistance, Medicaid and other taxpayer funded social safety-net programs to keep body and soul together so they can work for the Walton family.
They are a net loss for many communities in terms of what they bring to the table and what they make off with--often with a big tax incentive to put icing on the cake!
No thanks, I'm taking my business elsewhere.

@Spacrazy wrote:The biggest concern for me is that you were allowed to return candy (even though it was unopened) assuming it was re-stocked. Too many variables for safety in this scenario - I wouldn’t want to buy it.
So many places and people that would love receiving some candy through donation.
This was my first thought. It's no different than the days people were contaminating candy (the razor blade years).
