No, not for the most part. I do believe though that God gives us the tools and strengths to deal with anything and anyone in our lives, if we just listen. Sometimes that help comes in human form.
I do believe that even the worst situation can be turned to benefit often not for us (as I don't see how the loss of a child can ever be a benefit to a parent) but for someone in our lives or someone who crosses our path.

Nice hearing all the takes on this quote...you have made me really think about this. Each post has good points.

Any quote is one person's opinion!
I believed "What goes around comes around" until my SIL buried her 2nd husband at age 55. Life just isn't fair sometimes!

I don't necessarily think God "puts" people in our path. But I do believe that THINKING he does......for a specific reason........is a very healthy way to look at your life. Everything ....every person......who has come into your life makes you the person you are today. And if you love that person you are.....then you will be happy that everything happened exactly as it did.

You're right life can and is unfair. Makes one wonder why one person can have such heart breaking events in their lives. We know someone who has quite a bit of money, is kind and always so upbeat. You would never know she has been divorced, has two children with severe mental handicaps, one that is an alcoholic.
She is now remarried and was very close to her stepson who out of the blue took his life one day on the freeway.
I have asked her how she handles it all so well....she said she has to or she could not be there for her other children...though at times I can see it wears on her...some how she barrels through.

Well I do not believe in God but I do believe that people and experiences are in our lives to teach us, others or simply learn how to deal with things in a more effective way. Whether how to deal with things or knowing what to avoid in the future. I can't tell you how many times I have seen this not only in my life but others as well. I have watched people who have had horribly abusive pasts growing up in an abusive home who have went to help others in fields of social work or mental health. I firmly believe that their experiences help them to deal with helping others in ways that someone who hasn't gone through those same types of traumas could. I went through a situation where I dealt with abuse when I was a single mom and I know that how my life went in regards to helping others find a way out would have never happened if I had not gone through that.
I don't know who is responsible for it or if it is just coincidence but I happen to believe they aren't just coincidences. I think things that happen to us whether good or bad help to prepare you for something you are meant to do or help with in some way.

Well, I DO BELIEVE IN GOD. I think we will come across all types of people in our lives, whether family, friends, acquaintances, people we work with, interact with, on a daily basis. But, it is how we react to people and situations that we, ourselves, are responsible for. We can not control a mean, hateful person....we can choose for ourselves to walk away, try to help them. But, it is how we are individually how we respond to all situations kind or not so kind.
Remember, Jesus met alot of people along his journey and he was unchanged in all he dealt with, HE TAUGHT, HE PRAYED, HE LOVED, HE FORGAVE AND HE SACRIFICIED FOR YOU AND ME. NEVER FORGET THAT! God Bless You All in the New Year.

Yes, I believe in God. I also believe you have to be an active participant in your life. Things happen, they just do. Sometimes the things that happen to you, change anothers life forever. . But I don't want to get into religion here. To each their own comfort. One thing I know...
A person can get "bitter" or "better" the only difference is an "i".

I just wanted to add that when I wrote that I didn't believe in God, that was in no way an insult to those who do. I was just saying that in the context of the phrase used here "God doesn't give you...." . While I may not believe in God, I do believe that what you go through, who you meet, etc... most definitely comes into play in making you the person who you are. I just happen to believe that God has nothing to do with it, that is my own personal belief.
I thought maybe I should clarify that because right after my post, Shell Garden capitalized that she did believe in God and while it is hard to tell what people are trying to convey sometimes with just words without getting the benefit of face to face conversation , at least to me it seemed she might have taken offense that I wrote that I do not believe in God. If I misunderstood, I apologize.

Excellent post shell
I believe God puts people in our path to learn, forgive and love after all God is Love.
