And speaking of the five boroughs, why is it ‘The’ Bronx? Anyone know?

I don't remember exactly, but it has something to do with it being named after a river - some version of  "Bronx".  So it's The Bronx in the same way that the Mississippi River might be called The Mississippi.

Or something like that!  It's been a long time since I've thought about it!  :-)

I think the borough was named after The River that was named after Jonas Bronck.

One could live in Manhattan or one could live on the Island of Manhattan.

People in Brooklyn & Queens don't say that they live on Long Island because L.I. is generally considered Nassau & Suffolk Counties. I was born in Queens, & lived in Brooklyn, Nassau, & Suffolk County.

I was curious about how "they" referred to the Florida Panhandle.

I googled and found both ... "Cities in Panhandle of Florida"  and

"Florida Cities on Panhandle".

Have to go check on Oklahoma and WV panhandles!

@ALRATIBA   You live In the Panhandle in Oklahoma.  Go a little west of here and you can live ON a Reservation IN New Mexico.

I'm all about correct grammar. I use the words in and on where it is grammatically appropriate.

Nope, not a snowbird.

I live IN Upstate NY IN my small city. However, I grew up ON Long Island. As a lifetime student of French, I can tell you that learning which prepositions to use is one of the great challenges of mastering the language. In French, prepositions depend upon whether a country is masculine or feminine. On the other hand, certain locations of multiple words use a different preposition. I can only sympathize with foreign speakers trying to learn in or on.
