@Mindy D I'm almost 73 and we never had the poly wheels. I think I skated almost every day too! We had a neighbor who had no kids but had the perfect smooth driveway and if we asked nicely, she would let us skate on it as long as she could stand it LOL!

Absolutely remember the skates and the key worn around my neck. Must say I was very good at it too. My older brothers and their friends would separate the skates and attach them to a wooden vegetable crate, given to them to by the grocery store owner, add extra wood on the bottom and then they had a scooter. Skinned knees and elbows was part of growing up, especially living in the city with no grass to be found. Falling off the monkey bars on to cement underneath, a metal swing bumping our head, jumping in the water from the opened fire hydrant where a vegetable can with both ends were removed was used to get that water as high as the second floor apartment windows across the street was part of our Summer fun growing up. Stick ball in the street and neighbors outside till very late at night because of the heat and no air conditioning, great memories of Summer in the City.

I remember those skates like it was yesterday. I loved skating and was always skating up and down city streets in my neighborhood. My route started at my house and went to a convent and church blocks away. The blocks which led me there were not traveled much back then.
I also remember over the winter months the wheels always rusted and I had to get new skates with a key of course!!!!

I had those skates also. We did not have sidewalks so I had to skate on the asphalt. Very hard on the knees and elbows. My grandfather used to call me "scabby" as a nickname.

@ECBG Yes, lots of fun. But now, thanks to you, I'll be playing folksinger Melanie's, Brand New Key, in my head like an ear worm for who knows how long
.
Seems like yesterday. Good times, good memories.

@AKgirl2 wrote:@ECBG ~ Sure do! Lots of skinned elbows and knees, but had so much fun! We skated side walks, and our church’s large asphalt parking lot. Mom was a gentle as she could be with tending to the scraped knees and elbows, but that horrible iodine stung so bad. Mercurochrome wasn’t that much better. 🤕
Funny, I thought about this not too long ago.
Oh the sting of Mercurochrome!

I remember my key was kept on an old tennis shoe lace and worn around my neck. Didn't want to lose it. We had a concrete driveway so that was nice.
