@monicakm.  The arrangement where a large mining company "owns" the town was, at one time, quite common, especially in Appalachia

On the other side of the Sandia Mountains from Albuquerque,  there is a small town called Madrid (Mad-drid), not like the city in Spain, that was a coal mining town where the mining company  owned all the houses.   The mine went out of business and closed.  The town was abandoned and hippies moved into the houses and fixed them up.  Now it's a very cute place with lots of craft stores, galleries and restaurants.  The largest restaurant is called The Mine Shaft.  The town is on a highway called The Turquoise Trail

@Travone.  Have you been there?  It's a beautiful drive on a nice day.

That sounds like a place I would love to visit. Have been to New Mexico several times, but, never heard of this town before.

@Sapphiregal.  It's the back road, scenic route to Santa Fe.   I always take out of state visitors there if they have time.  Fun place to visit.

@Kachina624    oh yes.  I love Madrid.  As for the mine shaft, I wish it was closer to my town.  Great place to spend some time.

The origami sculptures in Cerrillos are a fun stop along the way.
