Re: Death from Self Driving Car

Just the idea of being on the road with semi trucks flying around with no HUMAN in them driving on the EWay is beyond words frightening!!  I hope it never happens....at least not in my lifetime.

As for that accident....it's true that can be easily caused by driver error or pedestrian error stepping out in front of car.  I know of a super sad case...friend of mine....her good friend/neighbor who was a nurse got a coffee from a local starbucks and was reading her phone/texts....she didn't look apparently and stepped of curb (by crosswalk but not in it) and it wasn't flashing ok to cross....she was struck and killed.  This happened during the day...she was returning to work at the hospital.  Horrible....it was a accident all around...the car couldn't stop in time.

Re: Death from Self Driving Car

You just reminded me @2blonde!  I have been meaning to erase the phone numbers the dealership guy automatically downloaded into my car when I bought it.  Newsflash bubba:  I don't talk on the phone in the car even hands free because Smiley Surprised  I'm driving!

And if I trade in my car, who now has access to all of my private numbers?  I've been meaning to erase that and I keep forgetting.  On my to do list....

@Laura14  I would never ride in an Uber car again. Will I get a really nice person this time or an ax murder? That’s the kind of risk I feel like I’m taking whenever I step into an Uber car. They don’t properly screen their employees. There have been several rapes reported by passengers recently and accusations of hiring prior felons. When I need a taxi I use yellow cab. They do background checks on their people.

Sounds like the onboard driver that makes sure the car is doing what it should be doing was not on the ball.

Seems he could have overrode the car computer and slammed on the brakes. IF he had seen her.

Cars hit people every day, sometimes it is the drivers fault, and sometimes people try to beat a car that is coming and dash across the street.

The investigation will vet this out. I personally will never, ever ride in a driverless car. May be a generational thing because my son (age 30) says he will when they actually put them on the road. Crazy!

This is important to remember. There have been two accidents with self-driving cars in Tempe in the last 12 months. The other resulted in no serious injury and the investigation showed the normal car and normal driver were at fault, not the self-driving car.

I get that new things are scary, but the only thing I know right now is that more information is needed and I'm waiting for the investigation.

The person behind the wheel was a she not a he. The person that got hit was crossing her bike at 10:00 pm outside of the crosswalk where she should have been in the first place. I live in Arizona and the reason they are testing these cars so heavily is because we don’t have inclement weather. Apparently snow and rain really messes with the cars.

I just had a rental car after an accident for a month.  I hated it!

On the newer cars everything is there "for your convenience".  I found it dangerous.  I didn't even know how to drive the car because the car was trying to do everything for me.

I have skills, experience, and a license.  Let me do it.  I guarantee I am more invested in arriving alive than a computer chip is.

My parents recently got a newer car. It has bells and whistles that I didn't know existed. Its not like my car is a dinosaur, but geeze. Anyway, theirs is a very nice car, but I don't care for a car being that much smarter than I am!

This "for your convenience" seems difficult to figure out and get use to in my opinion.
