Have you ever looked forward to a vacation so much only to have something go wrong? My track record is every time I go to the beach it rains. Could be dry for weeks but will rain during my vacation time. Then there was the time we got up super early for a flight and got to the airport without id. Oy!
Thank goodness everyone, including his adorable doggies, are safe but Dan Hughes has a way of telling a story that just makes you laugh. Also, he gives thanks to the nice people he met that helped him.
I hope you enjoy this travel story and share a vacation that you took where something just didn't go as planned. Keep it light though - no tragic events please just silly stuff!

I'm sure Dan's just glad to be home safe and sound. Or maybe the "sound" part doesn't apply, as I'm sure he went through some mental traumas. What a scary experience.
I don't think I have any experiences that would match it. Driving around Washington D.C. for five hours (true) trying to get to our hotel I don't suppose would count. We could see the hotel, drove past it repeatedly but just could not find the road or exit to get to it! I was worried I was going to run out of gas. Eventually, after numerous calls to the hotel, we finally got there, walked into reception to hear the clerk answering other phone calls from likewise "lost" customers.
No one warned me beforehand about D.C. traffic patterns (plenty did afterwards ). I will never again drive in D.C..

As long as everyone came out of it safe & in good health, those kinds of vacations can be the best!

I have heard about driving in D.C. - not for me! This reminds me of when my niece moved to Germany. She went to an auto dealership with her husband and daughter. They told her to take the car for a quick test drive and she ended up somehow on the Autobahn! She didn't get back for an hour as she couldn't figure out how to get off!

@Eva-QVC - Sorry, I just laughed out loud at the story of your niece in Germany. Having lived in England for 20 years, I can absolutely understand. I'm surprised they didn't send the police after her, thinking she'd stolen the car. (Did she buy the car?)

I laughed too. Stuff like that is always happening to her so I think her husband just knew she did something crazy. I guess she bought the car as she took many trips while they were there. She just moved back home and moved into a new home. As we speak, she is currently locked out and waiting for her husband to get home. Her facebook posts are hilarious.

His doggies are precious. I don't see how anyone could turn them away!

The name of the car rental place he could not name is on the door in the picture.

My story...
My mother & I decided to take a coach bus trip from NJ to Connecticut-Foxwoods Casino - 3 nights. Normally the trip should have been approximately 3 1/2 - 4 hrs.
Bus driver new to the tour company (which shall remain unamed) & apparently never drove out of the state of N.J. The trip took 9 hours as the bus driver got lost.
That's not all.....
We all arrived at Foxwoods 1:30am & still had to wait for our RESERVED rooms. When my mother & I finally got our room keys around 3:00am, we opened the door & there were 2 NAKED couples sleeping on top of the bed covers. My mother let out a scream & me...
Hotel security arrived to the embarrassment of all me. The room occupants were very nice & calm.
To make a long story short, everyone in the bus group was fully comped for food & room service, received $100 to gamble, the occupents in our supposed room were comped, my mother & I got put in the bridal suite, and every one in the bus trip was reimbursed fully plus a coupon for a coach bus trip w/no expiration date.

What a great story @Mz iMac! I hope you had a different bus driver for the trip home! At least you were comped for everything and got some gambling money. I have been to that casino and it is beautiful.

I agree, @Venezia!
Lived in Alexandria 2 years, tried several times to get to the Jefferson Monument, could see it, drove in circles around it, but couldn't get to it. Visited all of the other monuments, though!
Thanks for an early morning chuckle.
