DH and I both "retired" in our mid-50s, 20+ years ago.  Have never regretted it.  Wish we could have done it sooner-LOL!!!

FIFTY TWO YEARS of someone else telling me what to do, how to do it, when to do it, how to dress, how to progress, how to perform.

I pulled the plug at 57 too...67 now and I loved every second of the last ten years.

I heard the call to do nothing, and I answered it!!!

I can't imagine having "worked" one more hour.

Carolyn and Dan are in thier mid sixites.

I wish them luck.

They still have plenty of life left to enjoy!!!

Re: Dan and Carolyn Post QVC

The problem was HOW they were let go. After 33 years and 19 years of making money for a company they should have had less of an abrupt firing and at least a send off with a cake as others had. Companies used to reward loyalty with a watch or some other acknowledgement----NOT a "Don't bother coming back" firing. Tacky QVC.

It's commonly done in the working world (all industries),the oldest and usually highest paid employees are the ones to go, when things get tight-

People take a chill pill!!!

Carolyn Gracie is about 65, and Dan Hughes, about 62.

Typical retirement age in the US.( average age is 64).

They are both  elegible to start Social Security, and Carolyn, Medicare.

Add a severance package to their retirement savings...why WOULDN'T they take it?

Corporations make offers to incentivize people to retire, ahd they usually make the offer to those who are most likely to accept it.

Especially if it's going to happen anyway ( job cuts).

It's actually a lot more respectful that just tossing someone out the door. Come on now.

The way QVC's sales and stock prices  have been going lately,they must have seen the writing on the wall and waited to see what would be offered.

At thier ages it makes sense...so they took it.

Yes they wrote teary goodbyes on thier social sites, but even those who retire voluntarily have a bittersweet last day.

They are NOT going to  be found living under a bridge on the PA Turnpike ( where they live in PA).

Imagine it another way.

QVC does NOT survive, and Carolyn and Dan, who clung on to the end, now say "Why DIDN'T I take that generous package when it was offered?!?!?!?"

Sheeesh.

@Othereeeen

Why would you say they got a severance package?  They have contracts and if their contracts were not renewed, their departure would be based on the terms of the contracts.  Early termination would be covered in the contract.

Please tell us where you got the information about this severance package.  Why would a company in financial trouble give a "wonderful" severance package when they don't have to?

Carolyn is 64.  Full social security age is 67 now.  Yes, she can start taking it now but at a lower rate.  Same for Dan.

@kze

I made it up.

Just kidding:

"We are committed to supporting impacted team members through this transition with severance pay and outplacement services, including access to an alumni talent directory to support them on their career journey, as well as extended access to our Employee Assistance Program," the company said in a statement."

Companies did that for employees who were terminated?

@kze    I really doubt either Dan or Carolyn are worried about drawing Social security and living off of it....  they had good salaries and I am sure huge retirement savings.

for me, SS it is just extra income. I by no means LIVE OFF OF SS.    Most people do not unless they had not saved enough for retirement. To live off of SS and expect that small amout a month to enjoy a rich retirement is laughable... most people are practically homeless if they require SS to supplement their retirement and pay the bills.

@paixmcdao

You DO know they were paid for the time they were "giving thier all" don't you?

And they WERE "given something" ...and they were NOT "terminated"per se....they were laid off.

Qurate Statement:

"We are committed to supporting impacted team members through this transition with severance pay and outplacement services, including access to an alumni talent directory to support them on their career journey, as well as extended access to our Employee Assistance Program," the company said in a statement.

Yes they're gone...but people should appreciate the difference between "Fired" and "Laid off"....

It has to to with POST employment benefits...such as abiltiy to collect unemployment benefits, possible health care benefits paid to bridge the employee to Medicare age or the age by which they can access their pension or 401K...

And if one DOES desire another job, being "laid off' hasn't the stigma of "being fired".

PA is an "At Will" state...you can be let go for ANY reason. Most of the timest that happens, there is no further benefits package like what QVC offered the laid off....you're just done.

And please remember folks..these were not 10 dollar an hour employees. They had contracts. Probably spelled out thier departure conditions when they originally signed them.

And I would bet they have "disparagement clauses" ( Google it if you don't know what that is).

You don't bad mouth your employer after you leave IF you've accepted thier severance package and want to keep it.
