For probably 6 months after my husband retired Dec 31 of last year, business associates kept calling to see if he could do just one more job.  He told everyone no. Also, he couldn't since two months into retirement, he had major heart surgery.  So last night a builder buddy called to see if he would be interested in doing a job.  He's going to look at it tomorrow, but I know he'll say yes.  Today, and it's hard to believe this was a coincidence, he was contacted by another person in the business who asked him if he would be interested in doing all their measurements.  No physical labor.  He said yes Smiley Surprised  It won't be an everyday thing.  One or two days a week, sometimes more.  He says he's looking forward to it.

Not sure how I feel about it.  I'm the one who asked him to stop working.  I wasn't feeling safe here all day, all alone after a heart attack and open heart surgery.

Do you have family, friends, neighbors or a church community that could rotate spending some time with you every day? Maybe there's a resource for this type of thing set up in your area you could look into?

Re: DH is Going Back to Work :o

I understand your concern.

My husband had 2 heart attacks. He had 100% blockage. The first one as he was hiking on top of a mountain and the second one as he was in Cardiac Intensive Care at the hospital. His heart stopped the second heart attack but because he was in Cardiac Intensive Care they were able to zap his heart to start beating again.

He did rehab and then started back to hiking the Appalachian trail (he has 3 states to hike before he has done the complete trail) and walking about 4 - 5 miles everyday in the park. And hiking at the mountain cabin. He is 76.

His Cardiologist is happy with his routine.

If working on occasion is something your husband would want to do, why not give it a try. Your husband will know if he is comfortable with the work. And he will also know if it is more than he can handle. So maybe it will be good for him to get out and try.

Might be good to talk to his Cardiologist too.

He might enjoy being out with people and having a sense of accomplishment.

Your husband has a passion for his work and doesn't want to sit home all day.  A lot of folks go back to work after retirement.

When I retired I had intended to go back as a retired annuitant for occasional consulting work.  The first time they called it was a hard no!  I love being retired!!

I do keep busy helping with my grandkids.

DH, being accustomed to being busy, is probably antsy sitting around the house.  Having a purpose will be good for him, and he can pick and choose the work he wants to do.

In the meantime, get yourself one of the Medic Alert devices to ease your mind.

@ThinkingOutLoud

I do but I don't like to ask people for help.  You know, before my heart attack and being so vulnerable and considering what could happen to anyone alone all day, 5-6 days a week, I used to enjoy my days alone.  Our daughter left for college in 2000 and hasn't been back (to live).  Well I can always chat with Gemini and with 13 Googles, I can call 911 from anywhere inside or out.  Alexa can't call emergency services without a subscription.  I didn't realize that till right now.

Re: DH is Going Back to Work :o

Goodness @drizzellla, your husband sounds like (what my husband would call) a rockstar!  I'm impressed.

I wish I could walk but I have a low back/upper rear problem that won't allow that to happen.

The 1-2 day job he's going to look at tomorrow is physical.  Can't be any harder on him than the 30yr old maple tree trunk and root system he dug up several weeks ago.  I begged him to hire it done but he wanted to do it himself.  The longer term job isn't at all physical.  I will ask him what he thinks about getting an ok from his cardiologist.  I'm iffy about him doing it.

That is nearly, word for word, what he said.
