Cutting the cord

[ Edited ]

Dear Friends....I'd be appreciative if you would share your experience with cutting the cable cord.  We are currently paying over 2500/per year to Time Warner/Spectrum for poor service and 5 tv channels that we watch.  They are increasing the bill this month by over 13/per month.

My husband has suggested Sling, but It will help if you would share any experience/input.  We will keep the internet with Spectrum for $75/per year and add Sling for $35/per month....have more channels and save over half of our bill.

We have wanted to do this for some time, but the familiarity with what we know has not inspired us to take action.  This last rate increase puts my hair on fire.

Appreciate any input...we are going to move on this over the next few days.  ThanksHeart

@phoenixbrd   We are in the same position as you with cable.  There is a Spectrum program that allows you 15 channels (I think) to pick from instead of paying for a lot of channels that you don't watch.

Right now it's only for new customers but we were told they are working to have it available for current customers.

We are also in need of a new TV in the family room and will be able to get rid of the box if we purchase a Samsung Smart tv...there is an app that allows viewing with out the box that we rent.  We have several TV's in the house and each one has a box that we rent.

It's a racket....

@Mom2Dogs   Yes, we checked on that selecting a few channels and found we really didn't save much money.  The Samsung Smart TV might be a good alternative.  Thanks for your input...and you are right, it's a racket!

@phoenixbrd  We cut the cord almost 3 years ago now and haven't looked back.  Was getting tired of our cable company raising their rates every year.  We have more than enough channels to watch and don't miss the cable or the cost one bit.  📺🔌

@SloopJohnB   Great...and good for you!  I am looking forward to this move.  Are you using a streaming service...which one?

@phoenixbrd  No, actually we don't.  We bought an indoor antenna for each of our TV's, upstairs and downstairs.  We get all the local channels, plus numerous other channels.  More than we even watch.  I realize it may not be for everybody, but it is plenty for us.  😊

We are unlikely to ever "cut the cord."  Our internet/cable/phone is a little over $200/month.  When RCN raised our rates significantly, I called and got a "loyal customer" reduction to only $10 more than our old bill.

I don't understand streaming, etc.  And the "streaming" services as I understand are also raising their rates.

I want to be able to turn on my TV and choose what I want to watch and not think about which "streaming" service carries which channel.

To us, cable is worth it.

@SloopJohnB  Thanks for sharing.  I wish we could use your solution.  In our valley antennas don't work because of the surrounding mountains.  I'm happy that you are able to use the antennas!
