To me it is "Columbus Day." Here I think it's mostly for federal, state employees and some schools have it as a holiday and others do not.

Your employer.....for not having the day off?
Indigenous Peoples' Day was begun in 1989 in South Dakota, where Lynn Hart and Governor Mickelson backed a resolution to celebrate Native American day on the second Monday of October, marking the beginning of the year of reconciliation in 1990. It was instituted in Berkeley, California, in 1992, to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. Two years later, Santa Cruz, California,instituted the holiday, and in the 2010s, various other cities and states took it up.

All the years I worked in private industry, we never had Columbus Day off.

I usually had it off. On days the Courthouse was closed we normally were given the day off.

@rms1954. Who?
I Googled it and still have no idea who she would mean. It seems that there are several states that have changed the name to different things. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with any particular person's influence.
