When you were a young girl what celebrity TV husband best summed up what you wanted in a real life mate?

I always wanted a guy like Dr. Hartley from the Bob Newhart Show. He was always so kind to Emily and was just a gentle and unassuming man.   Their marriage always seemed to be exactly what I dreamed of when I thought about marriage.

I never went for the macho type of man.   I didn't care for men who liked to be the center of attention.   My dad was a very kind man so I knew that was what I wanted in a partner.

As I got older I used Dr. Hartley and my dad as my yardstick in choosing my husband.  Kindness and a gentle demeanor were crucial to me.

What traits were important to you when you thought about your future husband?

Not so much a husband, sorry, but Mr. Rogers I adored and wished he was my dad.

According to research, most girls do look for men that have personalities that are similar to their fathers.

I had a very warm, loving father.  He was funny, and outgoing, as is my husband.  There are a few differences, but I can see they stem from how they were reared by their parents.

Intelligence and a sense of humour.  Often those two do not go together.

Although I didn't see him until reruns, Ward Cleaver seemed like a good husband and father. My problem with Bob Newhart is that the writers often made him the butt of jokes (even his patients were silly stereotypes). Ward seemed respected by adults and kids. I even recall an episode when Eddie Haskell complained about "The Warden" but later admitted he wished his dad cared about him as much as Ward did the boys.

@J Town Girl Buyer beware!  Have you ever tried on a pair of shoes and thought, yes?  You then get home and wear them all day and found you made an error in judgement, same can be said here.

Pre-teen stuff, but the first time I thought in those terms was the oldest brother on the show, HERE COMES THE BRIDES - Seattle setting -- TV story from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Not only was he strong and handsome but big brother was wise and cared for the community. I saw him as a leader and family man.

How young?   When I was about 10, my ideal future husband was Davy Jones, one of the Monkees!
