We've had that happen a time or two and though inconvenient I appreciate our bank being on top of things. I am horrible about carrying cash so the card is my best friend!

What a way to start my Sunday.  I got a call from my bank regarding a suspicious charge of $198 ony debit card.  I didn't purchase anything for that amount.  They denied payment and then cancelled my debit card.  Tomorrow I'll go to the bank and get another one.  It' will probably take a week before I get the replacement.  That's what I think anyway.  So aggravating because I'll have to change my debit card on all my accounts.  I'm thankful that my bank is so diligent.  Usually when I get a call about a suspicious charge, it really is legitimate.

This happened to me last year but I caught the fraudulent charge right after it was made.  But I was still furious and stunned. My card was "duped" when I used it to pay for gas AT THE PUMP.  I had no idea this could happen but found out there are thieves who put a scanning device on their side of the pump.  My bank has an online app so when I checked my balance 2 hours later I saw this odd charge that wasn't mine.  I googled the name which was an abbreviation of an online auto parts seller.  I called my bank immediately - they had to cancel my card.  And I had to reevaluate my shopping habits.  A friend told me about the gas pump scam device.  I called the Police to report it then found out that a theft like that had to be over $1,000 for LE to act.  Even the gas station people weren't shocked.  I was advised to NEVER pay with a card at the pump - rather use cash or pay inside at the register.  This is happening now on a regular basis, I'd just never heard of it and I was livid for days.  My new card arrived in 2 days.

Yikes!  Been there, done that.

In a short period of time, I had suspicious transaction attempts on my debit card and it had to be replaced TWICE.

BOTH times it was triggered after I made a legitimate purchase at Target!

Although I already was doing this most of the time, i was reminded to ALWAYS use my other hand to cover my hand entering my PIN number.

Reason?   Those cameras overhead ... the ones that look like little black balls on the ceiling .... record your transactions, including entering of the PIN numbers.

Shady security people can view and record all your information from the film, as well as your PIN!

@Tinkrbl44  for years now I've used nothing but my Debit Cards with the Visa logo. Most of the places I shop at I can use it as a Credit Card and never have to use my pin.

You can check to see if the places you show allow this so that way you won't have to use your pin number if you don't want to.

After researching and reading posts on this board, I declined the debit card my bank wanted me to have with my account.  It eliminated a few potential problems.  Likewise, I have never had need to use an ATM.

Credit cards are safer to use as you'd only be liable for $50.  Twice the card was used fraudulently for a major purchase in another state.  Visa handled the problem as soon as I called.  ( A new merchant at the local mall may have been duped by a young cashier.... ).

A new scam involves your cell phone's SIM card being taken out and used by the scammer to kidnap all your data and convince your provider to change your address to theirs.  Providers are getting cautious about these requests.  This is why having verification codes sent to your cell phone is not a good idea.

Re: Cancelled my debit card

[ Edited ]

I heard a lawyer say never get a debit card.  It's not worth the hassle if one gets stolen and used.

So, I do not have one even though my bank claims it's safe.

Also, have no automatic payments from my credit card or bank account.

I'm about to get a new iPhone and the new iPhone 14 and higher, will not have SIM card trays in the new phone.  There will be an eSim instead.  I don't know exactly how that will work yet.

I also have alerts on my credit cards & debit card.  Anytime they are used, I get a text.  But minimum is $2.   A few months ago, I saw a 98 cent charge on my debit card (check them everyday).  Called the bank and had to get a new card.  I was not happy.

I try to be as top on it as I can.
