What a way to start my Sunday.  I got a call from my bank regarding a suspicious charge of $198 ony debit card.  I didn't purchase anything for that amount.  They denied payment and then cancelled my debit card.  Tomorrow I'll go to the bank and get another one.  It' will probably take a week before I get the replacement.  That's what I think anyway.  So aggravating because I'll have to change my debit card on all my accounts.  I'm thankful that my bank is so diligent.  Usually when I get a call about a suspicious charge, it really is legitimate.

My bank is good about all that too. Have had my debit card used a few times--in Italy and In Germany  of all places. but got a phone call or text about it  and they took  took care of it. I went to the bank and got a new debit card then, no waiting, but what a hassel having to change any auto pays and passwords and such. Never did I have to pay anything because of it. It's a hassel---a plague on those dirtbags that do this to us!!!

When that happened to me, the bank made me a new card on the spot. With luck, your bank will too.

Hubby's bank does that too.  Fingers crossed mine will give me my new debit card while I'm there.

Re: Cancelled my debit card

My bank texts me to let me know about suspicious transactions on my cc.  I had this happen a few days ago.  The transaction was for over $600.00 in Europe....maybe they got it when I used my card over the summer while on vacation?

I now have to wait for a new credit card to be mailed to me which I will get hopefully some time this week.  It is a pain to have to update a few accounts linked to that card.

I don't know what it means to have your debit card linked to your different accounts.   I only ever link a credit card to different businesses and use a debit card to occasionally get cash.

The few accounts where I have automatic payment with my bank is linked directly to my bank account rather than any debit card.  It seems like it's just an extra step and easier to get hacked.

@chrystaltree

good for your bank to see and cancel your card.

if i am correct, if your debit card is hacked, then there is full access to your checking account and it can be wiped out. i don't know what your bank states, but that was mine years ago and never linked anything to my debit card.  i only it to make deposits and withdraws at the bank.

i would link a credit card to those accounts, if possible.

my c.c. has been hacked multiple times in the last 15 years and i had no issues with removal of charge and new card issued.

for me, the only bill linked to my checking account is Verizon b/c i get i discount for paperless billing.

all other businesses are linked to a c.c.

We never use our debit card for online purchases, in fact we don't  even use it at local merchants.   It's CC all the way. If there is a breach, our own personal banking account won't be affected - and there have been way too many breaches.

We only use the debit card to withdraw money at the ATM and only certain ATMs.  Too many, very smart crooks out there, and one has to be on the defensive all the time.

A replacement doesn't take long but changing things over does.  I also when ordering on line use a credit card and not my bank ATM card for protection any more.  My bank is good at notifying but I feel better keeping a close eye on it.  Just like a restaurant I do not use my bank card.  Mostly cash or I get a gift card.  For the holidays I use gift cards and set myself a budget and when gone it is gone.  I purchase through church who gets benefits for using them.

I have a Q card and never use anything else.

Just have to keep on it and do what it takes to protect our money.

Here's an action that will stop this moving forward.

When you're not using your debit card, turn it on OFF.

VERY easy to do. Log in your account, go to manage your cards.

Turn off and done.

No one or nothing can get access until you turn it back on.

I do this now after I took was hit with scammers.

Not anymore.

We have never had a debit card. When possible we pay cash or use a credit card dedicated to a single purpose.

A very Merry Christmas, And a Happy New Year
Lets hope its a good one
