I went to the pond (down the dirt path under the tree canopy in flip flops.....) this afternoon to feed them some bread.
They're really growing! I love the murmur they do!

@ECBG How lucky you are to have that marvelous nature preserve in your backyard. Remember, however, there are venomous snakes that love ponds and put some proper shoes on. It's been my experience that if you're not in the woods all the time, your eye doesn't even see something like a copperhead.

Thank you. We have loads of black snakes and no copperheads where we are.

@ECBG YOU may be mistaken. According to this map you do. I know we had them in Tennessee and in the Smokies

Thank you. DH may have meant he hadn't seen any copperhead. I haven't seen any in our yard and we've been here 40 years.
I know black snakes are a deterent to poisonous snakes.
(DH just said he had not seen any.)

I ran across one when we lived in the piney woods North of Houston. They're beautifully, perfectly camouflaged, gorgeous colored but hard to see and not very big. A co-worker got bitten by one while working in her flower bed and was very ill and in terrible pain. She was in the hospital a week.

@ECBG great advice from @Kachina624. Speaking as one that was bitten on the top of my foot by a copperhead in my backyard while playing ball with my dog on the grass. Hospitalized and given anti venom. I still bear the fang marks. Better be safe than sorry. I am in Dallas area

@ECBG I wear boots whenever going in the woods or pastures because of snakes. We have lots of rat snakes, black snakes and have had at least 3 copperheads in our fenced yard. @Kachina624 is so right that copperheads are amazingly difficult to spot. I would take the extra precaution of wearing protective footwear (doesn't have to be snake proof boots) regardless. I also love going to ponds and just sit there looking.

@ECBG I hope I don't sound too "preachy" but I really don't want you to have to undergo the pain of a nasty snake bite. I literally shuddered when I read that line about the flip flops in the woods. Take care of yourself.

@mspatmac - You are so lucky! Those things are lethal. I'm glad you're alright, with minor scars after what you went through.
I remember one Sunday in Georgia when I was young. Mom was gardening along the back of the house and I was in the back yard with her. She unearthed a bed of baby Copperheads. They were wriggling down in the hole. She screamed and started attacking them with the hoe. Dad came running out, finished killing them, then said, "Where's the mother? She's around here somewhere." He was right. And she was big. He killed her. The whole thing was too much for me. I remember it vividly even today!
We lived near the water and my dad was always fishing. He and his good friend went out in a small boat all of the time. One time his friend fell in the water. He was attacked by water moccasins. I remember going to see him in the hospital. He was eventually OK.
My mom was petrified of snakes. She wouldn't even look at pictures. One time we were in a movie theater. She saw a snake and screamed. My brother and I were so embarrassed!
