In 1869, the head of an organization of Union veterans Maj. Gen. John A. Logan established Decoration Day as a way for the nation to honor the graves of those who died in the Civil War with flowers, according to the U.S. Veterans Affairs Department.  In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May, as were some other federal holidays.  @nana59

It was called Decoration Day so we could decorate the graves. I did that on purpose. Hubbs will love it. I guess you never heard that.

When I grew up Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day.

Our home was near the main cemetery in our town, and there would always be a military presence, political luminaries and at least a bugle to play "Taps."  The occasion was solemn and also provided a time for those running for office to stump.

Speeches.  Decorating the graves of the fallen.

And then the family get-together (but it wasn't a big deal picnic or anything).

When Tennessee Representative Estes Kefauver was Adlai Stevenson's running mate, he came to the cemetery to speak.  I managed to get his autograph.  Representative Kefauver was very a agreeable chap.

I haven't heard Memorial Day called that since I was a kid.  Most people here will celebrate it next weekend.  Weather it's socializing or decorating Graves.  We're having freezing cold, rainy spells.  It's been in the 40s for a few days, dark and rainy.  A week ago we were in the 90s.  I'm blaming this cold weather on the people who complained about the heat last week.  Mother Nature didn't appreciate that.  LOL  We're hunkered down watching Netflix and napping.  The weather won't be any better tomorrow.

My grandparents always called it Decoration Day and we always got the lapel poppies.

All three of their sons served during WWII and all came home safely. My dad also served duting the war and went on to serve as a navy officer for twenty years. My parents met at a USO dance right after the war.

A day of remembrance in my fortunate family. Lots of ceremonies, parades and military bands growing up.
