Do you see black squirrels in your area?  We've had one in our backyard off and on.  We feed the birds and of course squirrels come, too.  He's beautiful jet black.  We saw them when we were in Canada a few years ago.  I'll try to post a pic if I can.

Yep, we have them here in MI.

 

I've seen them while working in Detroit as well as travels to the UP.

I've seen them in heavily forested areas on the East side of the Sandia Mts. They look evil; much larger then regular squirrels with tall, erect pointed ears.

 

The species is called "Aberts Squirrel"

We feed the birds here too. In the winter we average about 5-8 squirrels during that time. One of them is black. I attached a couple of pics...

See black squirrels all the time, white squirrels showed up a few years ago, both are pretty.

they aren't as common in my town. But, we have one who lives down the street.  He comes in our yard once in a while for walnuts.  But the crows and 3 other squirrels have a fit.  They seem to know their territory
