Re: Back to WORK... tomorrow

@Happiness Is Inside JOB, I am glad this ordeal is over for you.  Yes, you deserve a break from your demanding daily schedule.  My sincere best wishes to you!  You deserve it.

To all who were affected by this furlough:  You were in the hearts and prayers of so many people, including so many I know.  You are respected and valued by the majority of people.  May you be blessed and never, ever have to go through this ordeal again.

Re: Back to WORK... tomorrow

I think at a certain point in your life or career, when you deal with something like this once too many times, you begin to look at things differently.

Nothing like you have to deal with ... but when I worked in corporate, our "parent" company had layoffs about every 18-24 months.  It was a food company so products sold off, taken off market, etc.  It became difficult to do your job properly when the next round of rumors popped up.  Will our group be the next ... will it go by years of service/age?  After a while I was hoping I would be in the next round of layoffs, just so I could get on with my life.

We always should have a Plan B!

Good luck in whatever you decide and I'm glad you are going back to work.

Do you realize this outfit as you refer to it is the Federal Govt. My Dad was a Federal employee and I had a really good life. My DH is a current employee and he loves his job.

Yes the shutdown was awful but it is a blip not a long term thing

After this extended  “break” I would hope young people employed by this outfit would look for work elsewhere.  I could not imagine going through this again ad again.

As a former Fed, I think you have some great ideas I wish I had thought of when I was going through shutdowns.

I'm hoping that something happens so they will no longer be an option.

@I am still oxox    I only said that name as I was afraid  to print the word Government as I thought it might be  a banned Political thing here on these forums.  But since you used the the word government I guess it is not a banned word. I was not  inferring that working for the Government was a bad thing. Sorry you took it that way.

Re: Back to WORK... tomorrow

I am very relieved that you and all those government people are going back to work---I have to say that I never REALLY realized just how much the fed employees mean to the rest of us in this country. I have a new appreciation for the work you do. I truly hope --------you don't go tru this again however-----no one can be sure, can we. Such a sad state of affairs due to "temper tantums. "

Re: Back to WORK... tomorrow

I don't know of a specific company, but these opportunities do exist.

Dh was talking about someone he spoke with at his work who is an engineer who works from home last week. I have also known a couple of nurses who did something from home to do with the medical field.

Good luck to you, @Happiness Is Inside JOB.

Re: Back to WORK... tomorrow

I think you might feel more optimistic about returning to work when actually get there.  You were not on vacation, you were not out on sick leave.  You were not being paid.  Everything was uncertain.  So, it's natural that you would not be enthusiastic and happy about returning.  Give it some time.  Yes, indeed.  There are opportunities to work from home.  I myself work remotely and I absolutely love it but I did not change employers and begin from scratch.  I would never have done that because, at this stage of my career, starting over would have meant a significant cut in pay.  Not to mention my retirement benefits with my employer.  I know several people who work from home now but it was something that came via their employer.  Yes, remote work exists.  Usually in customer service.  You would be surprised at the number of customer service reps who are sitting at home when you speak with them.  Even my cable company; I called with a problem and the rep and I were chatting and I mentioned that my wifi issue was preventing me from working and she said she could understand because she works from home.  Like me, she goes into the office 2 times a year a best.  I say that because you shouldn't risk going to some third pary agency or whatever to find remote work.  I think that is where the scams are, companies that hire remote workers don't go through a third party.  They hire through their own Human Resource departments like they do for any other jobs in their company.  I would check out the big insurance companies and utility companies in your area.
