Re: Are You Treated Like You are OLD?!

When I was 62 I went to a specialist for allergy tests and halfway through he sent a nurse in to double check my date of birth because he didn't think I was that old.  He said I did not look, dress or act that old.

[ Edited ]

I was at Ross today, and the cashier asked me if I was old enough to be a member of the Tuesday senior discount.  I thanked her for asking me and I did appreciate the 10% discount (I'm 72, at least until next Wednesday).

Re: Are You Treated Like You are OLD?!

Saw a meme on another thread that said:

"Being twenty in the 70's was much more fun than being seventy in the 20's"

How very true. I act rather childish so I don't particularly act my age, but I definitely feel it some days. Aches and pains!

No. Most people are surprised when they find out how old I am. Women in my family “age” really well.

Re: When Did Drs. & Others Start to Treat You as if You Are OLD? & When Did You Feel Old?

@LuvSoCal Yes, KP. When I worked there we would notify patients when they hit 60 (I think it was 60, could have been 65) that they needed extensive health screening, it took about 3 days to complete all the tests. We also would personally call, repeatedly, to have annual pap's and mammograms. We would open the imaging department until 8:00 or 9:00 PM and continue calling patients until they made appointments. We had these campaigns about once per year.

Well, that was about 15 years ago when I worked there so I thought they still did this. I should have known when they never contacted me for my annual after 6 years, I wasn't going to get notified. When I asked my doctor about the extensive health screening at 60 she said they no longer do that. I specifically asked if I needed any kind of testing and she said I did not. It's obvious I needed several tests but was never advised.

I was a huge advocate for KP but boy, now that I am with another insurance I realize how they are not what they use to be. Glad they are working for you as health is very important. I know some of their specialty departments are fantastic. And thanks for your reassuring words for the colonoscopy. It definitely helps.

I remember the 2 part annual health appraisals they used to do but now we just schedule a physical with the PCP. I really am shocked that your doctor wouldn't know from looking at your records that you needed to be referred for certain tests. As an aside, my SO, who is also a KP member, had a significant heart procedure performed last November at the Prebys Institute (Scripps La Jolla campus) Everything was coordinated through KP and the process was flawless from start to finish. They have been excellent at all the follow-ups since, too.

I'm glad that you have found another health provider that you are happy with. Now, schedule that test you've been putting off!🌺🌺🌺

Re: Are You Treated Like You are OLD?!

When I was in my 40s, everything I went to the doctor for, he said something like, well you know you're getting older. And he was about 10 years older than I!  The doctors I've been to in the past 10 years all seem to want to push meds on me, which I'm not interested in. The last doctor I saw wanted me to get vaccines for any and everything saying they were just precautions for IF I got any illnesses. Never went back to her, she told me if I wouldn't take the vaccines and meds she wanted me to, I'd need to go elsewhere...which I did. I have noticed since I've passed the 70 mark that I'm now invisible; never felt old before that. I'm not frail, don't take meds, live alone and do quite well on my own. It's unsettling to be invisible.

Re: Are You Treated Like You are OLD?!

My physician doesn't push all vaccines on me. I get flu and pneumonia shots on his advice, and once he asked if I was getting any Covid boosters. I got one and told him I wasn't interested in any more. He acknowledged that and never mentioned it again.

I am reminded for mammograms and colonoscopies when it's time. I haven't felt that I'm treated any differently now that I'm older.
