Re: Are You Treated Like You are OLD?!

I only wish people would treat me like I was old.  LOL  I get no special treatment, perhaps because I am overly active, have a fast stride and seem all kinds of happy all the time. But it is all in the cards and in my wonderful long term relationship with my very special hobby, square dancing.... Friendship set to music that keeps the body and mind active.  Two hour almost non stop dancing at a fairly fast speed following instructions and manipulating the moves so not to break up the flow of the square.

This is an invite to try it.  You won't be sorry and we provide partners, and friendships and snacks (sometimes). Check online at Where's the Dance.

P.S.  I am approaching the big 80.  With hubby not far from 9.0.

Re: Are You Treated Like You are OLD?!

Not really-- except for last Oct when I broke my ankle and had surgery--spent one night in the hospital in a splint and was treated like I was a fragile flower-- am 68 so not a spring chicken. I had to go thru a few tests on how I was going to manage on my own --with crutches and a walker and going up/down stairs--an even going to the bathroom---with a physical therapists or 2---I crushed all their tests to their great surprise----wasn't my first rodeo with surgery on my legs . I  was alone mostly,  in a 2 story house  and a family to care for---was tough but so am I.

Re: Are You Treated Like You are OLD?!

Nope, can't say as I do.  I don't get treated differently at the doctor's office. We still talk about doing routine exams, tests, (family history of breast cancer and heart problems, polyps. None of which I have),  I am more active and look better than my mom and grandma did when they were my age, and I suppose my children will be more active and look better then me when they get to my age.

But do people treat me as if I am old. Not that I have noticed. My daughter commented that most of my friends are 10 years younger then I am.  Being around younger people must keep you in a younger frame of mind.  I'm 67.

@Rockycoast

You are correct.  Being around younger people helps alot.

I get along with people your age and they enjoy speaking with me. I am 87 in two weeks and very active. Always have been.

Started exercising 60+ years ago and never stopped.

Still going strong today.

Went to college to get a degree in my 70's and love being around the younger set. Learned a lot from them and they from me.

They would think I was the teacher in the beginning of the semister.  They enjoyed hearing about the 50's, 60's and even WW11.  My womens History class was so much fun because my friend and I, she also enrolled in her 70's, would tell them what actually was happening then. Some of the information in the text book was incorrect and  we would tell stories of  what was really going on.

So, for me keeping active and learning was and is very important to this day.

Do what you can at any age.  Keep the mind and body active.

Hi. Just because you're a certain age, you will still need pap smears. I was told that as well, but found that medicare will pay for a pap, every 2 year.

It is necessary.

Yes, because I am old.  I have no problem with it.

Re: Are You Treated Like You are OLD?!

I can't stand being referred to as "dear". Very patronizing. When I was 61, my dr told me he would need to change one of prescriptions since "the elderly tend to metabolize these meds differently". I thought he was talking about someone else....then I congratulated him for being the first person ever to call me "elderly". He turned beet red!  My stylist and my nurse practioner both said " due to your age" in the same week when I was 65, referring to my thinning hair (turns out it was a med)

Re: Are You Treated Like You are OLD?!

It started last year with me when I developed arthritis and have to use a cane.  I hate it.
