@Luvsmyfam  My financial advisor helped me, although I think it is a pretty easy process.  Your local office may not be seeing people in person.

A friend of mine did her enrollment over the phone.  She had a specific time and date to call, she said it was pretty easy.

When I was thinking about retiring and considering taking my SS a little early I talked to a SS agent over the phone. The information left me confused so I made an in person appointment. When I went in I was helped by a wonderful young man who wrote down exactly what I would collect depending what month I retired in before I reached full retirement age. I could see in black and white the advantages to continue working until full retirement age. Bless that young man! I continued working and when I was ready, signing up was easy. So my advice is to max out your monthly payment (you're not there yet.).  Also, you can only collect one payment, either yours or your husbands, not both. But, of course, if your husband is still alive and your still married, you both collect the SS you've earned. There are a few rules pertaining to that which are lengthy for this forum. Ask which check is greater because they won't automatically tell you.

You'll sign up for Medicare through social security. This is trickier! I took advantage of free senior services my county provided to help understand all the in and outs. I would recommend that to anybody.

@Luvsmyfam

Please go online SSA. Gov for information about applying for benefits. I recommend doing a phone interview with your local office.

Please ask the representative about sign up for Medicare.

I highly recommend reading the book AARP Social Security For Dummies by Jonathan Peterson.  You can purchase it on Amazon but be sure to buy the latest edition as there are always changes each year.  It is written in plain language and will help you navigate Social Security.

There is also a companion book Medicare For Dummies by Patricia Barry.

I will be 65 in a few months and will sign up for Medicare.  But, my full retirement age for Social Security purposes is 66 and 4 months.  You can google a chart that tells you your full retirement age based on what year you were born.  Full retirement age is not 65, that is the age you can sign up for Medicare.

An estimated 700,000 people around the world, 400,000 of them children, have died so far due to the discontinuation of the USAID program.

I signed up online on a Saturday night; took about 20 minutes.   I finished right before the website went down for the night.

Monday morning about 9:15 a.m., just like the website said, a SS agent called to verify my info and tell me what additional info was needed from my employer.   I mailed that to him within 7 days; he called as soon as he received it, verified info with my husband, and I was approved.

As soon as I received the confirmation letter from SS, I called my VA health insurance, gave them the info they needed, and that took care of everything with my Medicare and supplemental insurance.   Everything I dreaded doing, was completely done in 2 weeks.

@Luvsmyfam - it's unfortunate that you do not have a home computer, when I filed for SS, it was all done on-line way before this Covid pandemic, as previous posters have mentioned, it only took about 20 min to complete, once I had entered the information that was requested I received a phone call from an agent at a local SSA office to verify data entered, once approved they sent confirmation and was receiving my SSA payments soon after.

You don't have to go to a SS office. I did all mine online and it was easy.  Go to SS.gov, set up a My Social Security account, and apply online. All your questions are covered in the online application.

It's the same with Medicare -  go to Medicare.gov and set up a MyMedicare account. You can then apply online.

MyMedicare can also tell you what supplemental insurance plans and prescription plans are available in your area.

 When I had my phone appointment with SS in February they signed me up for Medicare at the same time. It was easy. Then after I got my confirmation letter I was able to sign up for Medigap.

 @Luvsmyfam  When you have your telephone appointment you should inquire about Medicare. You can have both Medicare & Medicaid. The customer service advisor will explain everything to you
