I went to Catholic school in the 50s. There were no snow days. No busses either. The nuns said the doors are always open, get your butts in here. If you stayed home you stayed after school to make up the work. Oh if the heat went out, keep your jackets and mittens on. Today school is cancelled before it begins. I don't know....

@frenchie  Not all schools are the same. Our high school was a Regional one. Two small towns attended the HS. It was probably at least six miles from my town. Maybe more, so we were bussed there. No school for bad snow days as school was up on top of a hill. So not all schools and towns are the same.

In everyone's opinion:
Are schools as focused and dedicated on teaching students as they once were in this country?

I have no children. I only ask because I have read much online along the lines of this thread so I'm curious as to opinions as you all probably have children and grandchildren

We had snow days only when roads were not passable. Wind chills were never a factor. I got frostbite waiting for the bus in a minus 55 wind chill.

@Midmod my thoughts on current public schools is that there is little time for teaching basic educational ski!ls. Lots of time spent on behavioral issues. We all remember the teacher who flung a mouthy, bratty teen against the locker. His parents didn't bring a lawsuit - they wanted him to be taught a lesson. He told us at our 25th class reunion how he got zero sympathy at home and sat detention for a week.

Is this another tale about walking uphill to AND from school in 3 feet of snow?

@AuntG
I guess they used some tough love and it sounds like it worked.
My mother always told me if I caused the principal to spank me, then she would to after school. I had a healthy fear of authority ☺️

I remember the bad old days when we had to listen to the radio to find out which schools were closed.
