I take my dog to the dog park everyday because I'm retired and live alone, so my dog is "kind of" in solitary confinement all day. (This lifestyle is fine with me, but not with him.)
After adopting my dog a year ago, I realized he LOVES people and other dogs --- so making the daily trip to the DP is a must.
The dog park is part of a huge park and is across the street from some aparment buildings.
Long story - short ....
Lots of deer are in the park, but lately instead of staying IN the park, they've been coming closer to the street, the playground and the apartments surrounding the park.
The Incident:
Two days ago, while in the dog park, one of the dog owners looked up and said to me, "OMG! I hope no one runs over those deer." When I looked up, some deer had crossed the street to the apt. buildings and the tenants were "shooing" the deer into the street.
I started screaming "stop, stop, stop, they're gonna get killed". (this was during rush hour.)
I didn't have my cellphone, so I asked the other two dog owners to call the Park Police.
They refused.
When I said, "I should've have brought my cellphone", one of the persons who declined to make the call said, snidely, "yes you should've brought your own phone."
I had to rant and rave to make one of them call.
I was so upset, I started walking to my car to leave because the whole scene so stressful.
As I was walking away, the guy who called the Park police said, "what do you want me to say." (the one who brought the incident to my attention in the first place)
I was speechless! Shaking my head, I said, "you figure it out.".
I went home.
The next day, I reported the incident to the Park Ranger station and advised them to put "Deer Crossing" signs on the roads.
Did I overract?

No, @RinaRina, you did good but next time and every time take your phone with you. Things are always happening at dog parks and you never know when you may have some sort of emergency.

@RinaRina That would have stresses me out as well! You did everything you could.... you reacted because you care about others well being. No you did not overreact.

You know what tics me off about this ...?
Everytime I ask these dog owners to call the Park Police about something, they WON'T call. They just freeze, looking like idiots.
For example, three months ago, when it was still very hot outside, there was a terrible stench in the dog park. Everytime the wind would blow, everyone would pull their shirts (or blouses) over their faces.
After a few days, everyone would sit on the benches with their faces covered the ENTIRE TIME they were at the dog park. I had to BEG someone to call the Park Police. The same BS happened. No one would call.
Since I usually don't carry a cell-phone, I had to call the Park Rangers from my landline phone the next day.
There'd been a DEAD DEER in the park for weeks.
What is wrong with people!

NO, you did not! God made ALL creatures and we should try to save their lives whenever possible. Shame on those who would not help you with a phone call!

I'd call animal control, explain the situation and request signs be posted - deer crossing as well as speed sign - populated area. Also, do same with local PD. Then notify someone Board of Selectmen/City Council, explaining problem and request their assistance: if it's on TV, and you speak up at the meeting, many others in broadcast area may even back you.
As far as those people at the DP - imho they're freaking morons and I wouldn't associate with them. I don't believe in dogparks anyways: when I was fostering, the rescue people insisted I not bring my boy to the DP. It can be dangerous for your furbaby there as some people don't properly supervise their pets.
Why don't you get together with friends who have pets and form a group where you could trail-hiking or something. I think it would be much safer for all.

Many areas have issues with deer and other wild life encroaching on private property. Not much they can do, don't see a sign doing much either. Unfortunately so many are dead set against controlled hunts to thin the herds.

Should have learned from this incident to carry your phone.

Believe me, it won't happen again.
I'm charging my phone right now.

Not sure if you are in a hunting state but deer season is upon us so the problem may go away in the next few weeks. Deer were all over places they shouldn't be in PA right before November started. Not the solution you want I know but the problem may be taken care of shortly. ![]()
