Re: An aging issue I hadn't anticipated.

I like doctors that are on the older side, like me.  However so much has changed. NO time anymore to chat.  Busy busy busy.  Lots more paperwork.

I managed to get two nurse practioners both very young.  When I fell and hurt my hip (muscle) the one who treated me told me I WAS OLD AND WOULD NEVER HEAL. Boy I dumped her faster than fast and I went to a local ohysical therapist and I was good as new in no time.  The other one I went to for minor bladder problems, she was young, kind and just all kinds of perfect.  Within a week I was 100%.

Seems more and  more testing, more and more medicines.  NOt my cup of tea.

Yes, my OB retired; my first GI INT MED decided not to take MEDICARE patients; my first derm retired. Heavens! Please do not let my hair stylist retire!

In the late 1970’s my PCP retired.  She took the time to match me to two different doctors, both women.  Felt so comfortable with the first one that I am still with her:  she was quite young so hopefully she will still be here later on.

I am amazed at how well she kept ahead of stuff.  She ordered certain tests that later on were being touted as in the vanguard.

She still is continuing to add to her knowledge and she really listens to you and integrates what you are saying with your test results.  Amazing woman !

Re: An aging issue I hadn't anticipated.

I just told my husband after my dental appointment yesterday,"I hope I die before Dr. ----- does". It's so hard to find a good dentist in my area, as it is, I have to drive 45 minutes to see my dentist.

Re: An aging issue I hadn't anticipated.

I had my doctor for the past 30+ years. I thought I would die when he told me that he was retiring. It was an absolute blessing in disguise. I now have a young doctor that is far better than my old doc. He practices new medicine and is constantly going to medical seminars to learn more.  I realize I was just stuck in a rut before. My doctor now is amazing.

Re: An aging issue I hadn't anticipated.

It's funny you should mention this now. My mother will be 89 this month.  A good friends mother will be 101 this month.  We had a good laugh on the phone  just a couple of days ago.  Our mother's have both expressed to us that they are afraid they may outlive us!  My friend and I have both gone through some serious issues and are thinking....you know....that may be a possibility.  My theory is...when it's your time...it's your time...no matter what your age....but your right....it's odd to think about it.

Re: An aging issue I hadn't anticipated.

I have been going to the same eye doctor and dentist for decades. I trust them. They are honest and not just out to make a buck. They don't charge me for something I don't need. I don't know who to go to after they retire.

I promise to remind myself every day that I am strong, courageous, and resilient.

Re: An aging issue I hadn't anticipated.

About 5 or 6 years ago my OB retired.  She was the one who delivered my second child.  Had been going to her around 30 years.  Since then the dermatologist I had been going to for way over 30 years retired.  My dentist only works two and a half days a week now and I've been going to him 30+ years too and dread the day he tells me he is retiring.  My primary care doctor/specialist is just a couple of years younger than I am and I've been going to him over 30 years and will hate it when he retires.  He has recommended excellent doctors to me to replace the ones that retired.     My other issue is that since I am a widow now, most of my lady friends are 10 or more years older than I am.  (Friends that are married have different lives than I do.)    These older ladies have some/many health issues and "family troubles" they are dealing with.  (especially the ones that live their their kids)

Re: An aging issue I hadn't anticipated.

I will add to previous post--had an eye doctor retire about 10 or 12 years ago so I started with the doctor that bought his practice.  Now he is going to be retiring soon.  At least he has more doctors in his office so I will stay with one of them.

@GCR18 agree, good idea to ask your PCP for suggestions now, sounds like she is definitely thinking about retirement in her future. Luckily, my primary is in her early 50’s (I have 20 yrs on her) & she has recommended a gastro & podiatrist that she knew from med school & that has worked out great! Good luck!
