Well, we went to a craft show the other day and one of the vendors had things made out of the hair of the Alpaca. She talked with us for a bit and she has some Alpaca animals and when they were sheered the way lambs are, they get this wonderful soft material. They had made some baby booties, and caps for winter, etc. I'd never felt it before and it was so soft. I may not be using the right terms to describe this, but that's the jest of it. If you have never felt how soft it is, you're in for a treat. Just an FYI.

Re: Alpaca knitted items

[ Edited ]

We have a few Alpaca farms in Virginia (I think near the mountains) who sell sweaters and things made from Alpaca "wool" I have never felt it and hope to go there this coming year if am able. I knew a lady who actually made sweaters from the combings of her chow dogs LOL. I couldnt believe how lovely and soft they were. She made them in the old tradition of the spinning wheel and was amazing.

I have several pieces that I purchased from a farm.   Beautifully soft too.  I also bought a pillow which has no allergies and you just fluff it up in the dryer.  Can't sleep without it.  Boutght socks too as gifts, they wear like iron, very, very soft.  Scarfs are great too.  Good Luck with your purchase.

My SIL gave me a black sweater that is knitted to look like a blazer.  I enjoy wearing it.

I love alpaca! It's my favorite fiber to knit, even over cashmere. If you ever see an item made of qiviut, snuggle it. Qiviut is softer than cashmere and alpaca, and the price reflects it.

I spin on my spinning wheels. A lady I know had a puppy and when it had it's first grooming I asked her for some of the fur. I carded it and spun it. It was a little poodle mix dog and white. I knitted her some red hand warmer mitts and trimmed them with the dog fur. They were beautiful and she was thrilled. Dogfurmitts.jpg

I recall my stepfather having a lot of alpaca cardigans which I think we're called golf sweaters in the mid 60s. I think they were expensive.

Alpaca is fab to knit with.  And - it is really, really, really warm!
