A What Would You do If............. Situation

Hypothetical, or not, situation.

A close family member works in a business situation where they have access to all the financial info.  This person helps themselves to a few incoming checks and deposits them into another family members bank account, then draws the money back out.  The person with the bank account is unsuspecting and thinks it's a paycheck.  They have access to each other's finances.  This person also has access to a doctor's prescription info and makes false pain rx's and then sells the pills.  All this stuff happens because they are living under limited income and need money.  Said person is also in cahoots with a child who knows what's going on and participates to some extent.    Both have had legal problems in the past and have been on probation for theft.

When they find out that you know, they blast you on facebook and tell you to go to H&ll.

If you had some information, but not positive proof, how would you handle the situation?

Even when you know that the outcome will ruin them for life and probably send them to jail.  Even when you know that it will destroy  a family.  Remember, it's a close family member.

Turn them into the police.  If they are stealing from family members and/or close friends, they are likely also stealing from others or will at some point.  Depending on the circumstances anyone who knows this is happening and does nothing or aids in any way can also be charged as an accessory.

There are ways to turn people in anonymously or as close to anonymously as you can get.  Calls to Crime Stoppers is one way - use a public phone.  Consult an attorney and have the attorney pass the info to the police.

I too would call the police before the actions and personal "hurt" reach epic proportions, plus, I wouldn't be an enabler which by knowing you are.

IMO, it doesn't matter who they are.  They need to be reported.  These are all CRIMES.  They are making the choice to do these things so nobody is ruining their lives but themselves.

Agree with everyone's comments. I will add, writing and selling drugs, depending on the drug I think, could result in a bigger sentence. You should definitely tell, as now you are an enabler which is not good for anyone. Good Luck!

I would-Call the police and report the crime.

I would not feel bad either, It is not my fault somelse choses to be dishonest and immoral.  It was their choice to break the law.

@Scooby Doo

If you had some information,

Give that info to the police.

but not positive proof,

It's the police job to find proof = investigate.

how would you handle the situation?

CYA

If someone else reports this crime & knew YOU knew & advise the police of such, you will be charged w/conspiracy.  Matter of fact if the criminal(s) tells the police all of the family members who knew what they were doing will be charged w/conspiracy.

If a minor is involved, the adult could be guilty of child abuse.  To not report it if you have knowledge of it can be a crime in some places.  I'd call the police and make an appointment with a detective and tell everything you know.  I would not go to the business owner...let the police do that and stay out of it.

They don't have enough money - so they commit crimes to supplement.

They refuse to stop despite the fact that you know.

You do not want to ruin the family by reporting them.

As others have noted, they are clearly on the way to ruin as it is.  Do you want it to get worse?

Do you want to subsidize them financially so they will stop stealing and selling drugs?

Do you want us to tell you that since they don't have enough money, that somehow justifies what they are doing - as well as justifies your silence?

I think you know what to do.
