That would be the actual term for the muscle, big or not.

@shaggygirl 👆 that's it.
Whether our butts are big or small, flat or bulgy, or meet any other description, the underlying butt muscle is called gluteous maximus.
Big butt doesn't equal big glute muscle.
Flat slack butts have weeny weak gluteous maximus muscle (I know, I used to have one) and some big butts are also weeny undeveloped gluteous maximus muscle plus alot of fat.
Like any other muscle, you can increase the size of your glutes.
You may have a body type that is just naturally well muscled to start...or not.
And both diet and DNA have a hand in a body's amount and location of fat storage.
So @shaggygirl , tying this back to this thread, you can increase muscle tone & size while reducing the overall size/measurement of your butt.

I am really surprised how many ladies are not aware of the glute muscles. Ladies I known over the years always seem to be concerned about what they look like when walking away.
Contraction glute muscles exercises are abundant, some can be done at any time and any place. Plus, the exerciser will be the only one knowing them. Think Kegel Exercises, and feel your glutes while performing them.
There are tons of contraction exercises, and quite a few stretching exercises to help keep one's glutes tight, while also keeping them flexible.
Back pain can be related or exasperated by a tightness(lack of flexibility) in any 1 of the many rear side muscle groups. Starting from the shoulders and every rear side muscle group, which can include the Achilles Tendon. They all need strength and flexibility.
These exercises apply to both genders. ( | )

@Calcgirl am I missing something? Did you mean "too bad those tight glutes didn't appear on the exterior of my..."? Instead of did appear?

How about a gluteous minimus?

Lsadies, ladies, I was trying to be funny, but obviously I failed. I know what glutes are and the difference between glutes and the other portion ( fat) of the buttocks. I was implying as a couple of ladies caught on here that I wish my outer area was as firm as those muscles buried behind the flesh of the buutocks. I then putting a laighing emoji.
