My husand and I will be visiting NYC over Labor Day weekend. We are seeking suggestions for fun/unique places to visit, shop, dine, have a drink, have a pizza, enjoy the view, watch people, etc. We'll be staying in the Chelsea neighborhood, not far from Macy's and the Empire State Building. Of course, we'll spend some time doing the usual tourist activities (visit the 9/11 Memorial and Central Park, see a Broadway play, etc.), but we're looking for ideas from people who have found some special not-so-well-known places in NYC. Thanks in advance!

If you're into a bit of history, DH and I found the Teddy Roosevelt birthplace kinda cool. I believe it's on 20th street. And then dinner at 'One if by Land' way downtown is always fun. It used to be billed as the most 'romantic' restaurant in the city. It is in restored carriage house that once belonged to Aaron Burr.

Can you tell that we're history nerds?

They have live music Fridays & Saturdays

http://www.metmuseum.org/visit/met-fifth-avenue

For tea and killer scones:
Alice's Tea Cup (3 locations)

Delis:
Barney Greengrass
Sarge's
Katz’s Delicatessen
(I don't like 2nd Avenue Deli)

Look for "A" rating in restaurant windows. Anything below is dirty. If there's no rating, they failed and they're hiding it. Don't eat there.

Chelsea Piers
Chelsea Market
Tons of galleries.

Bryant Park (behind the 42nd St. Library) always has free movies, dance, music, etc. The library is also worth going into, just to see the Rose Main Reading Room.

Damrosch Park (Lincoln Center) has free music, dance too. Check out " Lincoln Center Out of Doors". I don't know if there's anything over Labor Day, though. Sitting at the fountain and having drinks is nice.

Well. The above aren't unknown to us, but they're fun to check out.

Macy's is 34th between B'way & 7th Ave (4 blocks from Chelsea or at edge)

Empire State Building is 34th & 5th (5 blocks from Chelsea. 1 long block from Macy's. Kind of Chelsea - Murray Hill)

If you give me an idea of what you like to do, I could make suggestions. Also what type of food.

Born and raised in NY ... worked in the city all my life (Chelsea and Soho). Now living in the northern burbs of Chicago (husband born here). We are going back in Oct to visit my sister and family, and are going to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. I've never done it, neither has she! The other side (in Bklyn) is called Dumbo, and there is supposed to be amazing pizza, ice cream and pastries there. If you want to sail around the lower tip of Manhattan, try New York Waterways. I took that trip with my husband several years ago and it was so beautiful and relaxing. You'll pass Ellis Island, The Statue of Liberty and see the lower tip of the city. Someone said John's pizza on Bleeker... yummm. So is Patsy's on the UWS. WALK WALK WALK ... and WALK more. The last time we went, when we got out of the theatre, we walked from 44th St to 90th! Visit the various neighborhoods if you can.... there are so many. Just walk... it's so easy. Don't forget Washington Sq Park in the Village, and the surrounding streets. Lincoln Center, Central Park (there are so many gorgeous spots and things to see - check a map of the park online). Please DON'T EAT at any CHAIN restaurants! There are far too many places to experience. Oh, and have a hot pretzel from a street vendor. SOOOOO GOOOD. I could go on and on... but this is plenty for now. HAVE A BLAST.....

The Tenement Museum on Orchard St. is very interesting if you're into that type of thing. Guided tours through tenement houses, stores, etc. You see how people actually lived then. We did it once, but may go again. Looks like there is more now than when we went. Have fun in NYC.

Oh, and I know this is a typical tourist thing, but a boat ride around the city at night past the Statue of Liberty. It is all lit up and is the most breathtaking sight ever.

From recent experience, if you want to visit the 9/11 Museum, I highly recommend that you plan at least 4 hours to do so, and purchase your tickets in advance. The first time we tried to go, we thought we could just walk in and the wait for walk up admissions was about 6 hours. Tickets have a set admission time on them, and the earlier in the day you go, the better.

Buy a subway pass, there is no need to walk everywhere.

Unless you are fit and just want to.

But the subway is quicker.

Much easier to zip around the city.

It's not hard to figure it out either.

And in my case, I always get lost, or miss my station, just get off and get back on going the other way! Much easier to do when you have a pass

NYC Subway

Some of that is funny. Like there aren't 10,000 places to get great pizza in Nyc..lol But seriously, grab an armful of brochures. Put your sneakers on and just get out there an explore.

The one thing I did not do while in NYC is get pizza. LOL I thought about it after I was home.

The day we arrived, we dropped off our luggage, walked out the door of our hotel and just started walking. This was at 8:00 a.m. and we returned back to our hotel around 4:30. All walking. We walked and when we saw something that interested us, we went inside.

However, there were a lot of things too busy and crowded for us to do.
