Erase UHM from the English Language

I uhm don't watch much QVC uhm anymore for a variety of uhm reasons but landed on a show I was interested in earlier with uhm one of the all time uhm most popular uhm hostesses but just couldn't uhm take all the uhms. What is uhm up with that? Perhaps I'm uhm the only uhm one who has noticed which uhm would be uhm hard to uhm believe considering it's uhm just about every uhm 5th word. OMG she needs an uhm intervention.

I think she uses it as a comedic pause, but it has unfortunately turned into an annoying habit.

@shaggygirlAgree. Now, if you can find a teaching technique that will do it, you can make a fortune. Uhm is far from the only "tic" speakers try to avoid.

If we are talking about the same host, what annoys me more than ummm is her cutsie expressions, like she is talking to a pre- school class. I can't watch her anymore.

You're not stupid, must be the way I posted confused you, so sorry. There was a hostess on earlier who lately has been getting worse and worse about using "uhm" constantly, and I mean constantly, during her presentations. My post was supposed to be an example of how often she uses it during the course of her presentations. It just seriously got on my nerves today, more so than usual, had to stop listening.

I'm not sure who you are talking about, but several do it. Shawn followed Lisa R in trying to be cute, but it drives me crazy. Jill also does it a lot, but I don't watch her anyway. Also, everything is now elevated and MODERN! I just can't watch QVC anymore except for a couple of minutes because the hard sell and the same things being said over and over just turn me off.

@shaggygirl ~ it's very annoying and a hard habit to break. Last year, I purchased the naturally pretty eyeshadow pallett and a makeup brush kit. Both products are ok, didn't knock my socks off:/ I only watched the vendors presentations long enough to make a decision to purchase these items, then I changed the channel.

Uhm is not a word in the English language. It's part of a speech pattern that can be corrected if one wishes to do so.

I uhm completly understand the uhm op's post. It is very uhm annoying and another is like. Why do people like have to uhm like have to uhm have so many like fill in words?

Not calling names, but there is 1 host who uses umm & seems to stammer (not studder), then another seems to use it as a word. Both drive me crazy!

This is something that I have found annoying for quite some time. SK, JB and CG are the worst offenders for me. I don't find the hosts on the other channels saying "Ummmm" in every other sentence. Actually, QVC's hosts never used to have such annoying habits like they do now. It's annoying and sounds lazy. When you are a professional salesperson that speak for a living on television, they should be able to do a better job.

Me neither, I just continued with the way it was. Does not matter to me if it is Um, Umm or Uhm. Still sounds the same when you say it.

My co-worker wanted to improve her presentations by getting rid of ummms.

I'd sit with her while she was practicing and she asked me to give her a little kick everytime an umm made it through the rehearsal. It really helped her lessen those umms.

I can't imagine how hard it is to try to speak coherently while my producer is talking in one ear and my floor director is in front of me gesturing with non-verbal directions. All the while I'm trying to converse with the vendor and keep an eye on which model is wearing what with what.

A lot worse than "uhm" would come out of my mouth when I paused to process the incoming information while not losing my train of thought in the middle of every interuption.

@Gerdane I noticed "M D'A" does it alot also, & I agree, she started off so good. I find her annoying at times & turn her off.
