I keep hearing various hosts and presenters (Issac, are you listening?) use the terms "Downtown" and "Uptown" to describe the appropriateness of various clothes items. This terminology might mean something to people who live in or often travel to New York City, but, believe me, it's completely meaningless to those of us who live in the Midwest. Cut it out. We have no idea what you're talking about.

I live in Chicago. When we are going to the center of the city, where there are many businesses, the financial district, major department stores in one area, theaters, etc., we refer to it as 'downtown'. I have cousins who were born and raised in a small rural town in Indiana. When we were going to the center of town where all the businesses were located, they referred to it as 'uptown'.

And then there's Petula Clark's hit song from the last millennium, "Downtown." I think that despite the NYC origins, the terms uptown and downtown have entered into the vernacular. The QVC powers-that-be would put a stop to their use if they thought nobody knew what they meant. Lisa R used to talk about Madison Avenue all the time and the Upper East Side of NYC is definitely upscale. Downtown Manhattan has become so expensive, however, that most people can't afford to live uptown or downtown in the borough of Manhattan in New York City.
