Could responses to a post look different?

When reading where a discussion has had several comments in one box, it's difficult to see where one poster stopped snd the next one started. It's just one block of continuance sentances!

Yes, I agree. I often have a problem following who is posting which thought in those discussions.

It is hard to tell the difference.It seemed easier and clearer before the overhaul but I can't remember why.Well, thats neither here nor there as my mother would say.

When I have included a quote, I try to use a color or larger font. See the A up above where all the icons are? Click on the little arrow next to it and pick your color

It can look differnt you need to format it

@I am still oxox, @ECBG - I agree with you it can be difficult. I try to take the time to change my font color which makes it easier to decipher.

clinking the A but never tried the Arrow next to it !!

Oh dear! All the colors make my eyeballs bleed.

But one problem that could be easily fixed is that a lot of people seem to quote a post and then they make their reply INSIDE the quote box, instead of below the quote box, where the cursor naturally falls.

I guess I just don't understand why one would move the cursor up into the quote box so that their post looks like a continuation of the quoted poster's post.

I tend to blow on by the ones that are too bright, too large, or posted in all bolded (yelling).

One other thing - I think the board should code quotes so that they come out italicized. This is the exact purpose for italics - you use them to quote somebody.

Don't get me started on when people actually italicize their own posts so you are left wondering - are you quoting somebody else or is this you talking? But I digress...

I feel like I have to italicize posts that I quote to make clear that they are quotes and that what I type BELOW the quoted box is my reply.

I"ve had the cursor jump up into the quote box a few times. Pretty sure it was something that I did but, if so, I don't know what it was. Once it jumps into the quote box area, I haven't been able to get it out unless I cancel and start over again. .

I think it's only respectful to cancel and start over if the cursor is being stubborn and won't move out of the quoted area. Good for you, @scotnovel

I find that switching between Rich Text and HTML might help when you want the cursor to move, but not always.

You're so welcome! I know isn't it great? We probably have unleashed our coloring mania! ( I never was a good colorer? in elementary school-it took so much effort lol.) But clicking on these colors! Thats a whole different box of crayons!!

I have a problem with multiple quotes-within-quotes-within-quotes, too. It becomes difficult to see who said what. But in defense of some of them: Sometimes, if the person is using a mobile device it's difficult to edit out some of the quoted material while keeping part of it. Also, at times, all the quoted posts are helpful in keeping a reply in context.

It's very easy for the cursor to show up at the bottom of the quoted text and within the other person's text, as others noted, and I do the same thing @scotnovel mentioned -- I click "cancel" and start over. I don't think anyone does it on purpose, but I wish everyone would notice it and correct it before submitting a response. It's far to hard to understand which words belong to which poster otherwise. I try to remember to hit a few "returns" below a quoted post, to add more white space and make everything more readable.

The colors are great... but multiple colors jumbled in a reply, or the neon or bright colors, are very hard on the eyes (just my opinion, and really a standard for internet viewing, but I know not everyone agrees).

Hi everyone, I'm so guilty of this, really am sorry, I've just tried some of the suggestions here, but still cannot get it right. I agree with you all that it's difficult to determine who said what, lately what I've been doing is just @ the poster, don't know if that's better or not, I'm not very computer saavy so sure would like an easy way to do it.

@spix, Which issue are you having problems with? From your post I'm guessing, maybe it's how to post some quotes but edit out others... or how to be sure you don't add your response inside the quoted text of another poster? Maybe one of us can help?

@spix, You're welcome! To quote another post and then be sure your response doesn't show up as a part of the other person's text, click "Reply" and then click the word "QUOTE" above the reply box.

You'll see the quoted text appear with a light gray vertical line to the left, and your cursor will be directly below the light gray line.

Enter "return" a couple of times to add more white space and to help separate your response from the quote, then start typing. Your reply should not have the light vertical line to the left of it. If, for some reason, your cursor gets placed within the quoted text and your reply is showing up with that vertical gray line... the best way to fix it is to click "Cancel" and start again.

If you want to edit out some multiple quotes-within-quotes, it works best if first you add those spaces below the quotes to be sure you can place your cursor there after editing. Then, just carefully remove the quoted text by selecting part of it and deleting or with backspaces -- the way you normally edit text. It can get a little wonky if you remove too much, so just try some trial-and-error. Once you've removed the text, then carefully place the cursor well below the quote and start typing.

I was having trouble making out the actual post and then the reply on some posts. I always add a dash-line between the post and my reply. Just seems to make reading the flow of the thread simpler....
