Whiny voice vendors and show hosts

I have been noticing more and more that the generation of vendors and hosts on shopping channels and in general have the valley girl squeaky (like chalk on a chlkboard) nasel voice. Please give these women speech therapy before allowing them on air. I don't care what they are selling, as soon as I hear the squeak I change channel..

It's such a phony effect. It takes practice to sound like that. It no different than the phoniness some people speak with in order to sound as though they were raised in upper crust surroundings.

One of the reasons I miss Lisa R is that for my ears she had the best voice on any shopping channel I ever listen to. Lots of times our reactions to voice quality is personal taste, but it does matter - big time.

I agree. Voice is too sweet, trying to sound like a little girl. Grow up and be more professional.

I agree. When the powers-that-be are interviewing prospective hosts and vendors, a good strong, pleasant voice should be a prerequisite for getting any air-time. Some newer hosts are loved for being adorable and wearing edgy fashion, but they are too hard to listen to.

I so agree. The vendors, especially, get me to flick the remote. Won't name names, but one is the person who is forever whipping up soap in bowls, another hawks kitchen mixers, and last (well not really) is the person who is selling plastic containers. All in need of remedial speech class.

Lisa Mason had the most soothing voice, I loved listening to her. I miss her, I was sorry to hear the announcement that she wouldn't be returning.

Lisa Robertson and Carolyn Gracie have very pleasing voices. Many of the other hosts/vendors have voices similar to fingernails on a blackboard. Toastmasters would be a good meeting for them to attend. And it might help some of them stop saying: um and uh. This is their living....voice quality is part of what they do.

((I bet Beth QVC thinks you meant HER whiney voice. HA!)) Rachel Zoe has the worst sounding voice I ever heard. And some of those MALE designers on Project Runway are right up there with Rachel. I thought I was the only one that hates that whiney noise.

Unfortunately the problem is that no one cares anymore. They should because the audience still cares, we are the ones that have to listen to it (or not). They no longer care about grammar, spelling or pronunciation and the more it goes on without the public complaining about it, the more prevalent it becomes until PREsentation becomes the norm instead of PRESENTation.

Same with speaking voices. There IS training out there in order to lose the Glottal shock at the start of every word (It's is a clicking in the voice that can be heard at the onset of words that do not begin with some sort of consonant). It can be done. It's not all about enunciating words..... however that would be a fine start.... along with getting rid of all the ums and err (place holders while people think)....

The biggest turn off to me has been the Valley Girl Voice. I'm gone with the first breath.

Lisa does have an excellent voice that came off as sincere. Carolyn has a great voice over trained voice if she would only refrain from the sqeals, singing, and baby talk that are big turn offs.

Some vendors leave much to be desired as far as their presentation goes. But they are not trained to be visual sellers of their product. They get some training at the Q but learn as they appear more frequently. And their short comings are no excuse for hosts to mock them on Facebook as if they were at a comedy club. VERY inappropriate. Hosts are not clowns.

I had no idea some hosts were mocking vendors on Facebook. That's one of the most unprofessional things I've ever heard and QVC should get involved. Facebook pages are one of the things most bosses will look over while thinking about hiring.

As a matter of fact if I were a vendor and saw such on a hosts page I'd take a screenshot of it and provide it to my boss and QVC simultaneously.

I am another one who enjoyed Lisa Mason's speaking voice. Another favorite was Judy Crowell who I still get to enjoy on Evine.

While I agree with your perspective, it's really not QVC's job to offer speech therapy to any squeaky-voiced vendor who comes along. However, it wouldn't be inappropriate for them to have a few names of Speech Therapists / Voice Coaches available to those that could benefit from at least a few sessions!

Most are just great at their jobs, but there are

a certain few that just can't help themselves!
