Cookbooks vs Online Recipe Search

The two posts about cookbook authors and Patti LaBelle's cookbook made me think about cookbooks in general versus an online search for recipes. I used to collect cookbooks and loved them, but just didn't have room for them when I moved to a townhouse. I saved a few favorite cookbooks, but mostly rely on online searches for recipes now....it's just easier for me. I'm wondering what some of you do when you're looking for a recipe. Do you prefer browsing a cookbook for recipes, or do you rely on the internet? I could probably get rid of the "old favorites" considering how seldom I ever look through them!

@jannabelle1, I have collected cookbooks and recipes since I was a teenager. When I need a recipe in a hurry, it is definitely the internet unless I know a tried and true one from my collection. If I have the time to plan, then I go to my cookbooks first.

@SXMGirl, I think there's something special about looking through those cookbooks that we all collected! Unfortunately I just don't cook like I did before I retired!

@jannabelle1, to me, an afternoon of reading cookbooks is wonderful. I have no idea what I will do if we have to move.

Enjoy looking at actual cookbooks. I get many from the library to browse through.

@jannabelle1 I love to read my cookbooks. They help me to build a background, so to speak. Things that stick with me. But, usually I go to online recipes on a day to day basis. When I'm looking for a specific technique or traditional recipe, I go to the cookbooks. Of course, for us Mennonites, nothing can replace the Mennonite Community Cookbook!

@PA Mom-mom. I once spent the weekend at the Memmonite home of one of my college room mates. One evening we went to a potluck dinner at their church. To this day, I've never seen such a lucious array of delectable food. I remember a bowl the size of a 5 gal bucket filled with whipped cream (dairy farmers) to put on dessert. This was a cultural awakening for this city girl.

Pick up a copy of Mennonite Girls Can Cook. They have a great back story. They are Canadian and also blog. There is a US and metric edition as well as gf.

I enjoy reading recipes on line but nothing beats holding a cookbook in my hands. I enjoy reading them for the sake of reading. One can learn a lot. I find the best recipes that are tried and true are the ones from groups like church cookbooks.

Historic cookbooks are fun to read as well. If you read cookbooks from different eras you can see how cooking has evolved. I have the very first cookbook my great-grandmother gave my grandmother when she got married. How things have changed!

@Kachina624 Yep! There are some recipes in the Mennonite Cookbook you won't find anywhere else. My grandmother's and other relative's recipes are in there. Don't ask for a calorie count!

I love to look at cookbooks, but I find myself looking online at recipes and printing them out, and I like to read the reviews on certain recipes.

I do both. I read cookbooks like some read a novel. I have about 250-300, but don't buy them like I used to (unless they are very special, or from an author whom I completely trust... like INA). I collect recipes too from the internet and use that as a quick reference. I also enjoy reading the reviews and often incorporate them into what I'm cooking. I absolutely find that both methods serve a purpose, however, I do have a weak spot for a beautifully written and photographed cookbook. Can't wait for Ina's new one... soon!
