How important is this in a recipe? Can I just "make my own" by putting several spices together?

IMO, Beau Monde is important if it's called for in a recipe. It's got a distinct aroma, and I doubt if you could duplicate it. It's not that difficult to find in the spice section of most grocery storess. I used it in other recipes some years ago and always liked the flavor it gave.

Hi, @pattypeep. I think it'd be FINE to mix up your own! I often do that when I don't have something on hand.

I remember years ago when I needed curry powder, but had none. Until I looked it up, I'd no idea that there's really no such thing, and that it's a Western invention!

Kind of like Americanized Asian food.

Anyway, I just looked up 'Beau Monde' seasoning, and it appears that the spice company Spice Islands owns the trademark to the name.

"What is Beau Monde Seasoning?". wiseGEEK.

Personally, I think it is very important. Last year I was frantic as I had just a little left and none of the stores here had it. I searched online and decided on this recipe. Fortunately, I still had some original Beau Monde so I could taste, adjust until I was pleased. The ‘castor sugar’ is powdered sugar (in case you didn’t know). I included the note I made on my thoughts on original recipe. It takes very few ingredients.

Beau Monde Seasoning - Closer to the Real Thing!

★★★★★

Spice blends

Prep 2 mins ∙ Cook 0 mins ∙ Makes 2 1/2 ounces ∙ Source Food.com

Ingredients

2 tablespoons onion powder
2 tablespoons celery salt
1 tablespoon caster sugar or 1 tablespoon icing sugar
**tasted original and this recipe. This recipe is quite acceptable however I added about ¼ t. MORE of Onion Powder and Celery Salt, husband thought it needed it. Ether way, both good since Spice Island Beau Monde is quite difficult to find and also expensive!
Directions

Toss it in a jar with about 6 - 10 grains of rice if you live in a humid environment and plan on opening and shutting the jar a few times over a couple of months. Shake it up good, that's pretty much it.

Notes

Nutritional Info

Calories 38.3
Calories from Fat 0 1%
Total Fat 0.1 g 0%
Saturated Fat 0 g 0%
Cholesterol 0 mg 0%
Sodium 4.1 mg 0%
Total Carbohydrate 9.4 g 3%
Dietary Fiber 0.8 g 3%
Sugars 5.4 g 21%
Protein 0.6 g 1%

I especially noticed Beau Monde seasoning at Kroger's today, after seeing this thread. Beware........it's a very expensive concoction, so I guess you'd better decide how often you'll use it before it reaches an expiration date.

I toss out a huge amount of expired herbs and spices every year. I need to get that under better control!

I will be honest and tell you it's not likely I will find beau monde pre-made, spice-wise in my area. I've thrown the dice and as a lot of you say it costs money to mix your own spices, so I've made garam marsala and it wasn't really something that I enjoyed more than a wet dog in front of a heater. But then again I am probably the worlds worst apprentice apothecary.
