I found a recipe that calls for this.I can't imagine asking for it at the grocery store.Has anyone else heard of or used this in their cooking?

@I am still oxox Oh how ordinary.I thought it would be something exotic.I had to laugh when I read it because it sounds strange.Made me think of the old grey poupon commercial.Pardon me but do you have mangetout?

@Mothertrucker, @DiAnne You are both correct. "Eat all," as one does with snow peas.

I remember the first recipe I saw calling for haricots verts!

Had not a clue what they were talking about.

Green beans...as common as veggies get!

A couple of other examples of different names for vegetables:

Courgettes are zucchinis and aubergines are eggplants.

I can speak a little French and I thought that's what it meant, but after reading this thread, I came to the realization that we could "Americanize" it by turning it into a verb and making our vocab sound sophisticated and tries chic.

For example: I will dangerous this delectable cake.

I will dangerous this 12 oz rib steak and baked potato dripping with butter, sour cream and bacon.

I need help with past and present tenses please.

In the meantime, I am going to apply makeup by L'Oreal, Paris and go shopping for haricot verts, courgette et aubergine et camembert.....I feel so sophisticated I can't stand it!

Zhills,that was supposed to be "great" the way Tony the Tiger said it....I guess they don't make commercials like that anymore....

Have you ever noticed that we tend to have conversations on "Memory Lane"- kind of funny, because my memory has gone to heck......

One of the guys I used to work with said we should all go into the same rest home when we got too old to work, then we could tell each other all the same stories over and over and they'd all be new again.

I really enjoyed this thread -- I read a LOT of recipes and I'd never run across Mangetout before either -- courgette et aubergine, oui, even calamondin (which is an "acid orange"). I guess if we could pronounce it, we could use it as a toast, or maybe an endearment or even an exotic curse (you little snap pea, you?).

I really need to start studying French again. I used to look for Canadian sites and music, but the dialects are so different. The only ones I had a vague understanding of were broadcasts from Quebec it seems.

I was really doing well-at least reading and writing and coming from a stronger Spanish background, it wasn't easy, but it's so elegant, ne pas? Sigh...I probably messed that up.

Well, I guess I will start making dinner.....
