My grandmother made this. It was not goulash or chili. It was made of both small cubes of beef and pork and had onions, celery and some chinese vegetables in it like water chestnuts. It was in a brown gravy and served over rice. I probably have the recipe somewhere. It was good comfort food. I have not made it in a long time. Its good because you can make it and freeze it in small portions.

My mom never had a name for it-I wasn't crazy about it and called it "noodle junk". I do make it now with a little variation. My mom used hamburger, onion and bell pepper, stewed tomatoes and elbow mac. I use more seasonings I think-garlic, etc. and I like bowtie pasta instead of elbows. The Food Network website has a recipe for American Chop Suey that is highly rated.

Aww..hope you find it. My mom has been gone for 20 years and I've not had this dish since. She called it Slumgullion which i think was an irish nickname for the beef-a-roni/chili-Mac concoction. Yes, Paula Deen calls it goulash.

Great for cold weather. Wow hadn't thought about this in a while! Thx..

My mother made something she called Goulash that I loved as a kid in the '60s. It had ground beef, Rotelle pasta, canned bean sprouts and I think cottage cheese. I know this sounds totally gross, but it was so good. I was never able to reporduce it. Have any of you had something like this?

This is the way THIS New Englander makes it ...

Brown any amount of ground beef that you want and remove it from the pan.

Add a corse chopped onion and one fine chopped garlic clove to the fat left in the pan and cook until tender.

Drain fat from onions and garlic when done.

Add the ground beef, onion and the garlic back into your pan and add Campbell's tomato soup, the number of cans depends on how "soupy/saucy" you want it. We use one of the huge cans and one of the normal size cans. Make sure you add one can of water, as well.

Season sauce with oregano, garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste.

Add the soup, beef onions and garlic to the al dente pasta of your choice - I like penne.

Mix well and enjoy.

@eddyandme

I live in New England and have been here for almost 40 years and have seen many variations of American Chop Suey. I make mine with the seasonings right in the sauce that I now buy. Here is how I make mine.

I saute some green peppers and also a sliced or chopped onion and then add the chopped meat and brown. Then I add "Newmans Sockaroni Sauce" to the drained meat, peppers and onions and also a can of "Hunts petite diced tomatoes with garlic, basil and oregano". In another pot I have the elbow macaroni cooking. Drain the elbow macaroni when done al dente and then place back in the pot and add the meat mixture to it. Stir and heat all together and serve. If you want you can add some cheddar cheese to the top of each plate.

My daughter also adds bulk Italian sausage and fresh mushrooms to her mixture to brown.

I hope that this helps you.

Here ya go I edited it to make it more readable....lol.

AMERICAN CHOP SUEY

1 ½ lbs. of 92% ground beef

1 lb.
