I have just finished my second batch of the Chex mix. Looked at many recipes and all have the same ingredients just different measurements. Also made the muddy buddies and the Christmas trash. I had some trouble getting the trash to come together in small clumps. Added more white chocolate but I think it made it way too sweet. I must say my house smells so,food while the Chex mix is in the oven.

'Tis the season for Chex Party Mix, and I got involved in a search for the ORIGINAL "Original" Chex Party Mix from back before Bagel Chips were invented. I'll include what I found here, but I'd like to know what are your favorite snack mix recipes to make and serve during the Holiday Season?

                                          *  *  *

"The true original recipe came from an ad that ran in the June 1952 edition of Life Magazine. Yes, back then people actually read physical magazines, so all it took was one ad like that to spur a revolution which has now lasted six decades and counting. Not to mention, spawning sweet versions like puppy chow and more recently, spicy versions with cayenne pepper and sriracha and chai tea.

Rumor has it that the inventor of the first recipe was the wife of a Ralston Purina executive (the company who made the cereal, before General Mills bought it). She brought the mix to a holiday function in St. Louis, or so the story goes. And the rest is history -- or at least myth!

From the Life Magazine ad:

Wonderful Nibbling at Snack-Time

Try this new PARTY MIX.

Melt 1/3 cup butter in shallow baking pan. Stir in 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Add 2 cups Wheat Chex, 2 cups Rice Chex, and 1/2 cup nuts. Sprinkle with 1/4 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp garlic salt; mix well. Heat 30 minutes in 300° oven, stirring every 10 minutes. Cool.

-----

This recipe debuted in the 1950s. The version here is from the back of a box of Corn Chex cereal from the 1970s (which included a picture of those wonderful "Uncola" upside-down 7UP glasses).

CHEX PARTY MIX RECIPE

6 tablespoons butter or margarine

1 teaspoon seasoned salt

4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

2 cups Corn Chex cereal

2 cups Rice Chex cereal

2 cups Wheat Chex cereal

1-1/2 cups Planter’s mixed nuts

Melt butter or margarine in shallow pan over low heat. Stir in seasoned salt and Worcestershire. Add Chex and Planter’s mixed nuts. Mix until all pieces are coated. Heat in 250-degree oven for 45 minutes. Stir every 15 minutes. Spread out on absorbent paper to cool.

Makes 7-1/2 cups.

Then serve with plenty of light, refreshing 7UP.

I've. made this for years. A couple of years ago I found these unsalted mixed nuts at CVS. And I used them instead of the salted variety. I liked it better and no one seemed to notice.

I follow the second recipe that @Honeybit posted, with the addition of Cheerios. Sometimes I use peanuts instead of mixed nuts. Also, we don't drink 7-Up.

Many years ago, when it was first invented, my aunt served the version with white chocolate. After that, she served it every year instead of the traditional recipe. Her family must have liked it. They had fun calling it "White Trash," which I disliked as much if not more than the snack itself.

Anybody remember these? I don't know what year Crispix came out, but I have a handwritten copy of this recipe in with my earliest Chex Mix recipe:

Sweet Minglers

1 pkg. or 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1/4 cup peanut butter

1/2 cup dry roasted peanuts- optional

6 cups Crispix cereal

1 cup powdered sugar

Melt chocolate on low heat until melted. Take off heat and add peanut butter and peanuts. Pour mixture over cereal. Gently stir chocolate peanut butter mixture into cereal until coated. Place powdered sugar in a large storage bag, add cereal and close bag. Gently toss bag until well coated. Store in air tight container in refrigerator. Recipe from the back of a Crispix Cereal Box.

This was long before "Muddy Buddies" or "Puppy Chow" recipes turned up.

I make a slightly different version of CHEX MIX. Our family likes it, I often give it as gifts, and I have adjusted the recipe to use standard sizes of boxed cereal. Tony's Creole Seasoning is a family favorite spice blend that I find locally at our IGA, Walmart and Dillons stores.

SPICY CHEX MIX

14 oz corn squares

12.8 oz rice squares

16 oz dry roasted peanuts

7 oz crispy oats o's

16 oz mini pretzels

1 cup butter

1/2 cup worcestershire sauce

2 T seasoned salt

1 T garlic

1T onion powder

1T chili powder

1T cayenne pepper powder

2 T Tony's Creole Seasoning

Melt butter and stir in W. sauce and all spices. In large baking container (I use a large roasting pan) gently stir remaining ingredients together. Fold in butter mixture, being careful not to crush cereals. When well blended, bake in preheated 300 degree oven for 1 1/2 hours. Stir every 15 minutes. Cool and store in tightly covered container.
