1 cup walnut halves
1/4 cup sugar
1 T butter
1/4 t kosher salt
1/4 t ground black pepper
1/4 t ground cayenne pepper

In a nonstick skillet combine walnuts, sugar, butter, salt and black pepper. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until the sugar melts, coats the nuts and darkens, 5-6 minutes. Transfer to parchment paper and sprinkle with the cayenne. Let cool and then break apart.

I used a little less than 1/4 t of cayenne but use less or more according to the degree of heat you like. You might want to double the batch because I had trouble staying out of them before making the salad!
