Pulled Pork Question

I recently spoke to someone about a pulled pork recipe that they had at a party. They were told to use McCormick's slow cooker pulled pork that comes in an envelope. I decided to try it so I picked up the McCormick's seasoning and a pork butt. After speaking with the butcher he advised me to purchase one with a bone in because it has more flavor and he said that the bone is really small so it should not be a problem. So I purchased a bone in pork butt. When I got everything home I read the package of McCormick's seasoning and it said to purchase a 3 to 4 pound boneless pork butt and to cook it for 8 hours on low in a crockpot. My question is how long do you think I should cook a 5 1/2 pound one with the bone in. I am thinking maybe 10 hours? Also am wondering if I should use 2 envelopes of the McCormick's seasoning because I am almost use double the size pork butt?

I would say 10 hrs would be long enough on low in the crockpot since bone-in does take longer. You can always check it to see how it's doing. I would not use 2 envelopes of the McCormick's seasoning. Maybe use 1 plus a little of another if it looks like it needs some more seasoning.

9 to 10 hrs. should be fine. I agree about checking it and also about just using 1 package of McCormick. You could add a tiny bit of watered down BBQ sauce that you might have on had if you need a little more liguid. When it starts pulling away, take the bone out to let it finish cooking and then you'll know if you need more liguid.

the mccormicks seasoning pulled pork packets are great! i usually buy either country spare ribs, pork butt, or pork shoulder..sometimes bone in, sometimes not. i sear the meat on the stove first, deglaze the pan with beer, wine, broth, or water, and then put it all into the slow cooker. i add sliced onions on top of the meat for extra flavor and moisture.

about half way through (4 hours or so) i put the seasoning mixture in. i dont think you would need an entire 2nd packet. if you think it needs a bit more "sauce" you could always add a few spoonfuls of your favorite bbq sauce. i like to cook it on low for 6-8 hours.

That's sounds good. That's what I do when I make round eye roast in the crockpot. I had never cooked a round eye roast in the crockpot & did not know how it would turn out but it was really food. I also carrots, potatoes, onion, added cream of mushroom soup & it made a nice gravy with the added broth from deglazing the pan after searing.

I purchased the McCormick's pulled pork one and it says to cover the meat with the powdered marinade and keep in the fridge overnight or I think at least 1 hour. Then place in the corckpot and cover with apple cider vinegar, brown sugar and Ketchup but I am substituting Sweet Baby's Ray's BBQ Sauce for the Ketchup. With all of that I will not be needing the 2nd package as most of you said but if needed I could always add a little more BBQ sauce.

I was just worried that it said to cook a 3 to 4 pound boneless pork butt for 8 hours on low and I bought a 5 1/2 pound one and am hoping that 10 or 11 hours on low is enough time to cook it.

Nightowlz, Preds, sunshine45, and nunya....... thank you all so much for your quick replies and your suggestions and how you cook yours.

I used the McCormick's Envelope and followed the directions but instead of a 3 pound pork butt I used a 5 1/2 pound pork butt. I substituted my favorite BBQ Sauce in place of the ketchup and instead of 8 hours I cooked it on low in my crockpot for 12 hours. It was delicious. Thank you everyone for your help.

I usually smoke mine on the grill first then toss them in the crock pot. The seasoning sounds yummy. I'll have to look for it.

I always use a pork butt in crock pot also. Recently when my store didn't have any, I tried something totally unexpected & was DELISH!!! I had mistakenly bought some VERY think boneless chops awhile before this,(not for this & found when I cooked them they were so tough they were horrible)( I am talking about 2 in thick!!).

I was in desparate need of pork, so I chose to try the thick chops again. Put them in crock pot, approx 6 hrs, they made great pulled pork (of course more expensive then the pork butt).

One method is to dump your fave bbq sauce over them and put in crock pot, then when they are tender, pull apart with a fork and serve on your regular hamburger bun.

I think I like the chicken version even better--though sometimes you have to trim off that yellow fat on the sides of the thighs.

I wonder how they would be with the McCormick seasoning?
