Oven Roasted Chestnuts

Decided to try this with my children and grandson the day after Thanksgiving. I followed Martha Stewarts recipe. It worked well. However, none of us were impressed with the taste. After eating a couple, I tried putting a little salt on one. It did nothing for me. But glad I tried it. We had a little fun.

I remember when my father took us to Wanamakers in Philadelphia during Christmas. After looking at the beautiful tree reaching to the ceiling in the store we got some roasted chestnuts in a brown paper bag from a vendor on the street!

It was so cold out and I just remember how hot and wonderful they were. I can still remember and experience that feeling even today.

I don't remember much taste either but they sure were good right then at that very cold Christmas time.

My Italian family always had these at Christmas time. I always thought they were good.

My mother would always roast chestnuts at Christmas time in our oven. She would use a paring knife to cut an X on them them before roasting to make them easy to peel.

I haven't had any in years. Yes, they were delicious.

I like chestnuts, I buy a couple of bags from a small grocery store nearby that are already roasted and peeled, I chop them up and add them to my stuffing for Thanksgiving.

Same here! I can remember my mother cutting the X in them and putting them on a cookie sheet to go in the oven. My father would put a little salt on them. The last time I had them was probably when my mother made the last and that has to be three decades ago or more. Never disliked them, but never would go out of my way for them either. Guess that's why I haven't made them myself.

I remember one year my mom deciided to roast some only for some reason she forgot to make slits in them. They exploded in the oven.

We always had them after Thanksgiving & Christmas dinner. I really like them. Then when I got married I would make them for my kids. Even found a chestnut "x" tool for my husband as a joke gift.

They are quite expensive these days for such a small amount.

We had a policeman come into the ER at work. I had a bag of chestnuts, he too tried roasting them in a micro wave and they exploded .He loved it and left. They also are wormy, I wouldn't eat them.

I actually prefer chestnuts boiled. They come out nice and tender.
