Canned Pineapple

I've been craving pineapple lately and have been buying different ones to try them. Dole and DelMonte have regular and premium versions. There's lots of store brands. Plus occasional lesser known names.

To me they all seem the same in taste and texture. Am I missing something?

@PickyPicky3 I can't help you with what kind of canned pineapple to buy. However, if you are ever in Hawaii, specifically Kauai, you must try the Sugarloaf pineapple. You can't get it anywhere else.

It is the sweetest pineapple you have ever had. It's creamy with very little acidity. It's like candy. The meat of the pineapple is so tender you eat the core and all. Be prepared, they are very pricey but well worth it.

We will freeze some of the pineapple as well as Kauai's ice cream bananas. We then blend it adding a little coconut milk. Oh my, so good.

Okay, I guess I went a little off topic but I highly recommend trying the Sugarloaf pineapples.

Disclaimer: adding local island rum may produce the best pina colada you have ever had

@PickyPicky3 I buy canned pineapple a lot to make pineapple upside down cakes or ambrosia. My favorite brands of canned pineapple rings and pineapple bits are Dole and Del Monte. I never buy the premium brand. These two brands are delcious- do you like them? Have you tried chilling the pineapple overnight in a glass container? That really is delicious.

@PickyPicky3 Personally, I think all canned pineapple tastes about the same, no matter the brand. Unless I'm baking a cake or something, I prefer a fresh pineapple to eat. Grocery stores have the pre-cored all ready done for you, if that helps. I bought one of the pineapple corers that screw on and they do work, but if you don't have manuel dexterity and some good strength, they can be a challenge to use. I usually have my son do it for me. Takes him no time at all. (Young body and strength)

I never buy canned. I get the tidbits in the plastic 4 packs. I get Dole. I usually use them mixed into my salmon marinade when I cook salmon.

I don't know about different brands except I will never buy Publix brand again. I once used that, not knowing it was Publix, and when I ate it I kept thinking it tasted flat, didn't have that zing I expect from pineapple. I went and looked in the trash and discovered it was Publix brand instead of Dole.

@cjm61 My very first cruise (sometime during the 20th century), every morning I could not get enough of their pineapple which I had as part of my breakfast.

I finally got hold of the chef & asked how he made the pineapple so sweet? He laughed & told me it was a special pineapple only grown in Hawaii called a Sugarloaf.

I have never had a pineapple taste as good & sweet since.

I never had no desire to visit Hawaii. However, whenever I visit family in Cally, it does cross my mind to hop over onto Hawaii to purchase a Sugarloaf as if I'm going to the local grocery store.

@PickyPicky3 If you want a good tasting pineapple that is sweet, it has to be a fresh pineapple not canned. Unless you want to add your own sugar.

@PickyPicky3 Funny that you should mention you're craving pineapple. I'm not really fond of pineapple but I put the dehydrated pineapple that comes in a bag or pouch on my grocery list this week, & I haven't eaten that in decades.

I really can't tell the difference between brands---I want to buy fresh pineapple all the time but over half the time I get fresh ones that are tastless as well as being pretty pricy. I eat more fresh in the summer months than trying to buy fresh now---canned will do but rarely use it in cooking or baking. I do like using it in smoothies tho.

My favorite canned pineapple is Dole Tropical Gold Pineapple Chunks. Costco sells them in an 8-pk locally. They taste the best hands down to me. I use them in my morning smoothies.

I'm with you on that. The pineapple around here all tastes the same. When I go to my sisters in Fl she always has the juiciest pineapple. Yum. It's so good. Wish I could find some like that around here.

I buy whole pineapple to eat. I have some in the refrigerator that's pretty good but not like it is in Fl.

This time of year, it seems pineapple is less sweet and a more pale color. I prefer Dole and buy extra in warm months.

So the consensus seems to be buy what's on sale locally and have a friend in Kauai.

I remember touring a pineapple farm on my one visit to Hawaii. The guide would cut one off for you. So sweet and juicy!

@cjm61 Oh that sounds so delicious! I also like adding coconut milk and maybe a frozen banana...oh and some island rum for a nice frosty drink!! Yummy!

I only use canned pineapple for recipes and think name brand or store brand pineapple tastes the same. What I have discovered, however, is that store brand pineapple can sometimes have tough areas where the core was. If I get a can like that, I immediately start buying Dole. After a while, I'll switch back to Great Value (WalMart--where I get the majority of my groceries), and if that problem has stopped, then I continue purchasing it until the next time it happens. If I'm making a recipe using canned pineapple to take somewhere, I always buy Dole, because I don't want to take any chances on tough cores.

My husband eats a fresh pineapple every week. We are in the upper Midwest and in my opinion these pineapples are never good. They are not sweet and not very flavorful. Whenever I have pineapple at a restaurant, it is delicious, so what is their secret?

What kind of pineapple do you use? Fresh or canned? Slices, bits, or crushed? What kind of bread? I love pineapple.
