Dressing and stuffing are two very different items of food. Stuffing is put inside the turkey and is nothing like homemade dressing. Although many do not like all the ingredients in dressing, they will eat mash potatoes. I always like to have two carbohydrates on the table but I usually elect to have a sweet potato prepared in some way, roasted or in a casserole (as one of mine rather than mashed potatoes but sometimes a DIL who loves mashed potatoes and sour cream, will bring them), but to each his own. I don't do the same kind of stuffing as many others. I do a couple small apples, a mandarin orange, a large onion and celery stalks, no bread in mine. Just veggies and fruit. I make dressing from the turkey or chicken broth whichever I have. If I have a roast, I also do a hen for dressing. Dressing starts with on eggbread, a cornbread with several eggs for richness which is, after baking, then mashed up with buttermilk and olive oil, to which I add onions, avocado, chopped pecans, parsley and celery, some sage, salt, pepper, etc. I spray a bundt pan and put the dressing into it and bake, bring it out and unmold it, place celery and so forth around the perimeter to dress it.

Absolutely, both of them & some kind of sweet potato/yam dish too - all part of the delicious holiday meals, festivities & leftovers. Growing up we'd have some kind of pasta dish (usually lasagna) before the whole turkey spread - that's Italian!

Most people stuff the turkey with dressing/stuffing. And then use the turkey drippings to make gravy, which just naturally goes with mashed potatoes.

@Nonametoday I'm coming to your house. I want some of that fruit/vegetable stuffing. Never heard of that but it sounds delicious.

I also want my Mother's dressing too. DH's family is southern so we now always have cornbread dressing but I prefer bread dressing like Mom made. And I'll also take mashed potatoes, candied yams, turkey and any otehr side dishes that appear.

Edited to add: We also have sweet potatoe pie instead of pumpkin pie but I prefer pumpkin, but in our family now I'm the only one who never had sweet potatoe pie. It was pumpkin all the way.

Could be a couple reasons:

- when serving a large crowd, some may like one and some another

- if one is pricier or more involved, having more options makes sense

Because T-Day gives everyone license to go carb crazy...bring it ON!!! Oh, and the mashed potatoes give you more items on your plate to drown in homemade gravy.

I will share that my mom never served mashed potatoes with our Thanksgiving meal...but we did have potatoes. She actually served a dish that others might find a little strange. We always had cold Southern potato salad on our table. I carried on the tradition until one day my husband said that he'd really like to have mashed potatoes. And sadly, he wouldn't touch sweet potatoes with a ten foot pole. Me, I love any and all taters!!!

What is it you don't understand?

Somehow Thanksgiving dinner evolved into serving mashed potatoes and stuffing, something the pilgrims didn't have in those days. They didn't have potatoes, then, added later when they became available. They certainly are good with turkey and gravy.

Both became an American tradition on the day, including sweet potatoes. It wouldn't be a Thanksgiving dinner without all three in my house.

Since I taught nutrition, I would never serve dressing and potatoes, and corn, or any combination of the two.

Years ago, I bought glass Pyrex type cake pans which just look like 9 in rounds, 2 in. high with handles in clear glass. Perfect for dressing to be baked.

We have both because I like dressing an my daughter and her family prefer mashed potatoes. If she brings the potatoes, I may have a bit, but they are nowhere near my mashed potatoes. But, we also have both turkey and ham for the same reason. Just because the people coming over to my house for dinner like completely different things than I do doesn't mean I should give up my faves.

They like to do steaks for Christmas, so no dressing then, so T-giving is my only chance. We don't eat dressing any other time. It's just the two of us, and he doesn't even like to go to Cracker Barrel.

I always do a Marie Callender's Cherry Pie and usually make a Pumpkin Pie although I think really I'm the only one who wants Pumpkin Pie. More for me. My two faves are Cherry and Key Lime Pie, but in the fall I want a pumpkin one. Key Lime to me is more of a summer pie.

I miss potato salad.

HA!! I let nutrition fly out the window on Thanksgiving and all Holidays. I suppose nutritionists would be horrified to see what we eat during those days.

@ECBG Mashed potatoes,gravy and stuffing are my favorite part of the dinner. I dislike rice immensely and would pass the serving bowl on by.

I don't eat the rice or the rolls. If I don't eat it now, I won't be physically carrying it later. I much prefer a piece of pumpkin pie, leave most of the pastry.

i don't ever seve mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving; just sweet poatatoes and dressing. I think my family likes to have things we don't hvae throughout the year when the holidays roll around; makes it seem more special.
