We had this almost same recipe and one for a 9 x 13 pan go around on the recipe section sometime in the mid to late 1990s. It is WONDERFUL!!!! I like it better than my rice cooker, but the rice cooker is easier for me! I think I used to make it with beef broth and mushrooms. I'll have to try that! THANKS for posting! This makes THE best brown rice!

If you or someone you know thinks they don't like brown rice, try this with them! Great as a side dish or cold with added goodies as a salad. You can freeze it, put it in dressings to go with chicken, put some in your soup, use it with a stir fry, add some peanuts and soy sauce to it, mix it with other grains, etc. You will be surprised how many ways you can find to use this. Oh, and it makes wonderful Mexican rice!

I am so glad OP thought to post this!!!! THANKS!

Years ago a friend of mine made brown rice and put a poached egg on top and drizzled it with fresh honey. I know that sounds strange, but it was so good that I love making it every so often. This sounds like a great way to cook my brown rice.

Thank you OP for the recipe

Vicki

This is the way I cook it also.

You could also use low sodium beef broth in place of the water and add some diced cooked mushrooms for variety.

This is the only way I cook brown rice anymore. It works great!! You can also add some white rice to it too, or any other similar type type. Keeps it moist and not so crunchy.

Thanks for this post, Lola! I love rice, especially brown!

However, preparing it well ... STILL eludes me! I am pathetic on the stove top and lousy even w/ the Rice Cooker I insisted on buying. I could have wallpapered an entire village w/ the rice mushy paste I make! LOL I prefer my rice stiffer and all the little grains individual!

I thrilled to have a new way to try!

Realquiet...thanks for those suggestions as well. I love mushrooms and the beef broth is a good idea too.

One good thing that might help to know is that you really don't have to babysit a pot of rice. Just boil water, add in rice, pinch of salt (if you wish), give it a stir, put tight-fitting lid on pot, turn the burner down, and set your timer. This is how I've done it for a hundred years.

If I'm going to a part of my house where I won't hear the timer I just grab a portable one and bring it with me.
