Sandwich idea

My friend is having a gathering of about 40 people for an outdoor (very casual) event. Everyone will bring a passing dish, but she was going to provide hamburgers/hotdogs. She decided not do to that, to many to cook for and to hot to be over the grill.

Can you think of any other sandwich ideas? I suggested sloppy joes,...she thought about ham sandwiches, but she priced out ham..so that is a no!! Any other suggestions?

she could prepare a pork roast ( a lot less expensive than ham) in a slow cooker, then shred and mix with barbecue sauce. set up a serve-yourself bar with small sandwich rolls, cole slaw, potato salad, chips. that would be easy and would feed a lot of people.

@Mom2Dogs Sloppy Joes would certainly be easy in crock pots, but they may be too "sloppy." I was going to suggest a ham salad sandwich, but mayo and heat don't mix. What about just doing hot dogs in crock pots? She could have sides of baked beans and maybe sauerkraut.

ETA: Delish dot com has a recipe for doing 60 hot dogs in a slow cooker ("Slow Cooker Hot Dogs).

@Mom2Dogs - I'm going to something like this too, although we will be a smaller group.

Since it will be hot, I will suggest something cold. Tuna or chicken salad, as @nada54 suggested is good. You could think about something different, like cucumber and vegetable cream cheese on white bread with crusts removed, or how about deviled eggs?

I would avoid any sandwich with mayo because of the heat. Pulled Pork yum, taco bar, everyone can have what they want. Hot dogs in crock pots is good and substantial.

New Orleans Muffaletta! It is basically a sub sandwich made with cold cuts, cheese, olive salad, onions etc. They are great and you could make them ahead and wrap them, put them in a cooler.

The key is the olive salad!

I still think the burgers and dogs would go over best. In the past we have made them an hour before and put them in a roaster. Add a bit of water to keep moist. Also have made burgers and added mushroom soup and Worcestershire in a roaster fir mushroom burgers. Those are very popular!

How about brats in beer and peppers and onions? Maybe throw in some hot links for the adventurous and hot dogs for kids not in beer.

Outdoors? Cold cuts with assorted cheeses, breads and condiments. Everyone can make their own sub. Along with a fruit salad, green salad and a pasta salad.

Mom2Dogss .............Hot dogs would be my choice. Almost everyone likes them and they are quick and easy. Condiments for them could be mustard,ketchup, sauerkraut, chili sauce, diced onions.

I also like the idea of taco's. Easy peasy.

I agree with the cold cut subs. Look at a good italian sub shop menu and see what they make without Mayo. Then make them yourself or just Buy it from the experts and cut into little or bigger pieces depending on if it's a "walk around" or a "sit down" affair.

I woudl avoid drippy sauces. or invest in a couple of stain sitcks to have on hand.

Pulled pork is easy to make. If she really wants it low key and easy, she can order from a deli or Subway and they'll cut large sandwiches into individual portion sizes. Costco also does sandwich platters ( ham, turkey, and roast beef ), on croissants, and they put the dressings on the side.

My vote is for the pulled pork or cold sandwich/subs. Pulled pork is easy and you can set out all the trimmings to make your own sandwich. It can be with bbq sauce or carnitas with tortillas. Pre-made sandwiches and/or subs are even easier!

I just started Elin Hilderbrand's new book this morning and she was talking about a sandwich on Nantucket called the "ABC" sandwich. Apples, Bacon and White Cheddar cheese melted like a grilled cheese. Sounded kinda of interesting but I was also hungry when I was reading this morning.

How about just going to Jersey Mikes or a sub shop someone likes and pick up their party subs? They're small, comes in a box. Just order what you need. Or maybe a grocery stores that does deli platters?
