A Jello Salad question

I want to make a cherry jello salad made with tart pitted cherries in water. I am having trouble finding the cherries in water. I am wondering if I could buy cherries in syrup and rinse them in water? The recipe does not say use the cherry water, but calls for a 1/2 cup of water. The other liquid ingredient is coke.

I would think that would work! Or maybe get frozen cherries? Our store has both frozen tart and black cherries.

@Imaoldhippie That sounds like a creative solution. I don't know why it wouldn't work. I love cherries in any form. During this heat wave a jello salad would hit the spot. Let us know how it turns out.

@Imaoldhippie Well, get a jar of tipsy cherries and put a few in a coke with a good amount of ice and contemplate the situation on your porch on a pretty day!

That sounds yummy. I had a recipe that used coke and cherry pie filling with jello. Only made it a few times as it made about 9 cups of jello. Way too much. LOL

@Imaoldhippie I would buy the canned cherries in syrup and rinse them. I know the salad you are making. My mother used to make it. The coke was the tell.

If you buy the cherries in syrup, I would not rinse the cherries, and would use half a cup of the syrup in the recipe instead of the water. No way would I waste that flavorful syrup.

Rinsing cherries would totally work.

Just DON'T use fresh pineapple which has an enzyme which eats the jello, causing a setting issue.

Canned pineapple is ok.

For some strange reason I woke up this morning wondering if I could make a Key Lime something or other, starting with lime jello. I have Key Lime Pie on the brain.
