I saw this article about Martha Stewart's salmon chowder & I know Respect has a lot of salmon to use up.

It looks so yummy but I agree, kids probably ain't gonna eat it LOL!

Plus, cut the corn off the cob. As someone who develops recipes for a living and lowkey lives to garden (and cook for my friends), she's a true hero of mine...but even our heroes are capable of missteps every now and then. Enter: this simple salmon chowder that the internet has found perplexing for a variety of reasons.

At first glance, it looks stunning! Naturally, it didn't take long for the people of Instagram to chime in with their two cents.

instagram.com
I'm no child psychologist (or parent), but I'd have to agree with this person.

instagram.com
And for my personal favorite take — this.

instagram.com
Do children in Martha's world actually slurp up clam broth by the spoonful? Or did her social media manager post this as a prank? I have no clue — but there's another glaringly obvious issue with this soup that I, quite frankly, found even more puzzling than the controversial caption: the corn. We've got big ol' corn cobs floating around in boiling hot fish stew, folks, that you're apparently supposed to eat with...your hands? The world's biggest soup spoon? IDK, but I'm not the only one who noticed.

Martha Stewart / Armando Rafael / Instagram: @armandorafaelphotography / Via instagram.com
To dig in further, I looked at the actual recipe for Martha's Salmon-and-Corn Chowder (which appears to be from a September 2017 issue of Martha Stewart Living), and I realized that I just so happened to have every ingredient in my kitchen. Yes, even clam juice — drag me if you must. Since I'm physically incapable of not testing every questionable celebrity recipe I come across, I decided to give this one a go. And you know what? This recipe genuinely surprised me.

The ingredients are really simple (refreshingly simple, even), and like many of Martha's recipes, this one prioritizes straightforward, seasonal ingredients in lieu of hoards of spices and flavor boosters. I should mention that here in New York, it's not quite corn season yet — that'll come in August — but it's still abundant at every grocery store around me.

This chowder is also supposed to come together in about 30 minutes, which is a total win in my book...but we'll see how legit that claim is.

Ross Yoder
First, I melted some butter in a large skillet, added some chopped onion, seasoned with a bit of salt and pepper, and let it sweat until perfectly translucent.

Once the onions had softened, I added flour to the mix. This effectively created a roux, which helped thicken up the stew a little bit later.

Ross Yoder
Once the floury onions started to turn golden brown, I added the classic favorite of small children, clam juice (or clam broth, they're the exact same thing), along with some water and the diced potatoes.

Ross Yoder

I let everything simmer together until the potatoes were fork-tender, which took about 10 minutes. While I waited, I cut the salmon filet into bite-sized chunks and attempted the very divisive task of chopping up the corn into "one-inch rounds."

Ross Yoder
Folks, I'm gonna say this the only way I know how: DO NOT FOLLOW THIS DIRECTION. Beyond making the corn nearly impossible to eat once it's served — which we'll get into shortly — it's also incredibly dangerous. I keep my knives razor-sharp, and even then I nearly slipped and sliced my whole hand off due to the corn cobs being so difficult to cut through.

With all of my limbs somehow still intact (thank god), I added the salmon and Chaos Corn to my skillet and let it all simmer, covered, for just a few minutes.

Ross Yoder
Once the salmon was cooked through and the corn was "crisp tender," I added in the heavy cream and sliced basil, seasoned it with a little more salt and pepper, and we were all finished — in just under 30 minutes, I might add. Corn aside, pretty darn impressive.

Ross Yoder

I ladled some into a bowl for myself and garnished with some cracked black pepper and some whole basil leaves, as suggested. I even addled a drizzle of some basil oil I found lying around (remember, I'm the kind of person who keeps clam juice in his pantry), which was a 10/10 decision.

\
THE VERDICT: Let's address the two elephants in the room. As everyone on the internet already knew deep down in their souls, no, there is absolutely no way a child would eat this, let alone "spoon this stew up." For all the adults out there, rest assured that the clam juice ends up tasting really mild and only offers a slight note of brininess, but there's no way in hell kids would eat it. As for Elephant #2 — the corn — it's also a hard no from me.

Ross Yoder
Do the whole chunks of corn photograph really nicely? Absolutely. Are they also a full nightmare to eat? Sadly, yes, though I guess that's not at all shocking. To me, it feels like a nod to a low-country boil, but the Instagram-worthy presentation just isn't worth the hassle of having to carefully chew the kernels off the tiny cobs or worth the risk of slicing off a finger or two while you prep 'em. You could eat them with a spoon and likely splatter broth all over yourself (trust me on this one), or you can grab 'em with your hands and fully burn your fingers. The choice is yours, and both options are grim.

Ross Yoder

Instead, here's my suggestion: Cut the kernels off the cob before you even add them to the broth, then snap each corn cob in half and allow them to simmer with the clam broth and potatoes. All the sweet, corny goodness will infuse into the broth as it cooks, which will make the end results even tastier — just be sure to remove and discard the halved corn cobs before serving.

<IMG src="https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/h.yI9XoTKZOcLfXF90Xh2g--/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtjZj13ZWJw/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/KeBxQq7QJsIyQF3JSTMIMA--~B/aD0wO3c9MDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg--/https://media.zenfs.com/en/buzzfeed_articles_778/2698feb314f35b5a1e8d1af5038db25e" border="0" alt="Overall, the recipe itself (with that one very important modification) is a total winner. I'm not normally a soup-in-summer kind of guy, but this may very well become part of my summer rotation.
Quick Pot Sticker Soup

Copied this from the Allrecipes website and made it for dinner tonight. DH stopped on his way home from work and picked up some egg rolls and crab rangoon to go along with this. Went together quickly and tasted wonderful. I used the pot stickers from the Q in this soup. Nice quick meal to fix on a cool day that has been busy.

1 Tbls of sesame oil

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves of garlic, minced

2 - 32 ounce cartons of chicken stock

2 green onions, chopped

1 TBLS of sesame oil

salt and pepper to taste

1 - 15 ounce bag of frozen pot stickers, any flavor

12 ounce pkg of frozen stir fry veggies

1. Heat 1 Tblsp of sesame oil in large pot.

2. Stir in chopped onions and garlic; cook and stir until soft and transluscent, about 5 minutes.

3. Add chicken stock, green onions, and remaining sesame oil.

4. Bring to a boil over high heat; taste and season with salt and pepper to taste.

5. Reduce heat to medium and add veggies and pot stickers. Cook until potstickers rise to top, approx 8 minutes.

I see no reason you couldn't use fresh veggies if you prefer, instead of the frozen stir fry. I just like having some recipes I can make fast at home, that are also good tasting. Hope you enjoy this if you make it!

DiamondGirly-Did you bump this up?! I was surprised to see it today-kind of a deja-vu moment for me! Thank you or whom ever did this-I got a great kick seeing it again. The only Costco I am aware of in our area is about a 45 minute drive from us and we don't really go in that area often. We have thought about trying it out to see if we like it better than SAM's but would have to drive past 2 of those by the time we would get to Costco. Good to know products people are happy with if we ever do go. Hope you enjoy the soup if you try it.

spud188 - Thanks for another vote for Costco. If you like potstickers, I'm pretty sure you will like the soup. I still can't find a veggie combo I am happy with so end up making my own. Maybe Costco has something better to offer there, also.

RespectLife - I never make this soup without thinking of you!

vickisok - Yes, this soup will warm you up. Not real hearty -more "brothy" but it is filling because of the veggies. You and I share a name-but mine ends in an "e"!

mustang66lady--This soup sounds great and thanks for the tip about the pot stickers being at Aldi's on Wednesday. I just saw them in their ad. Glad to hear your husband has a smoker. I am the one who lives in your area and about 2 yrs. ago, told you about our BBQ contest (Jakey in June) in St. Jacob, but don't know if you ever attended.

Well, hello bbqjudge!

Have thought of you often over the last couple of years and wondered if you and DH still were judging! No, we have not been fortunate enough to attend Jakey in June but think about it every year. Still plan on attending. Like I said in a previous post, a lot has happened in the last 2 years that has turned our lives completely upside down. It reads like a soap opera, but we are finally getting adjusted and things are looking a little more settled.

You had mentioned something about learning how to be a judge and DH was very interested. Don't know if he still is or not as he is not here right now. I think he needs to find out a little more but if we make it to Jakey in June this year, maybe we can meet up and find out the info we need. As it stands right now, I don't plan any more than a few days in advance for anything.......

Hope you like the soup if you decide to make it. I have not made it with Aldi's potstickers but have ate them and thought they are better than those here on the Q. When I went back to purchase more, I found that they were sold out-this is the first that I have heard of them being back in stock since then! I plan on stocking up this time.

Have a peaceful evening and thanks so much for taking time to comment! Glad to "meet up" with you again.

bbqjudge,

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment on the soup: wish I could say I was the author but am only the "finder" of this from allrecipes. But it means a lot coming from a master judge because even though you judge bbq, your taste buds are refined! I always doubt a lot of what I cook and wonder if others will find it as good as I do; this recipe I thought was really good too, but had to wonder if others' have the same feelings or not. I respect the opinions of the people on this board because I have tried many of their recipes myself and have come to know that if someone here says something is good, most likely I am going to feel the same.

I hope you read my post to you above. I have passed around our leftovers from the 1st batch for others to try and they have all gone out to get the ingredients, so you are now famous for your recipe.

bbqjudge,

I just went to our Aldi's today and they were out of potstickers! If you went to the Aldi's in Edwardsville, you were a 15 minute drive from our house. One of our daughter's shops at the Edwardsville Aldi's as that is where she lives. And if you just went today, I may head over there tomorrow and see if they still have some. Guess I could be "famous" for something worse than soup, but have to admit, I didn't make this recipe up-was just fortunate to have found it is all. And I am happy others are finding the soup good, too!

Hope it is a lot warmer for Jakey in June than it is now!

Two places in the world I want to see before I die, is Ireland and Greece.

I hope you enjoy this soup if you try it. We loved it. I never thought it would get the attention it has since I posted it - now wish I had been smart enough to have invented it!
