The cost of nonfat dry milk

I bought some nonfat dry milk to make hot cocoa out of two new mixes, Guittard's and Penzey's. I was shocked at the price, 9.49. In checking this morning I figured out that this package makes slightly less than two gallons and is more expensive than two gallons of fresh milk. At least it weighs less and will keep much longer.

Given our current situation, people are probably still buying nonfat dry milk due to the shelf life. I'm not shocked by the prices anymore. Wish that the price of gas would stabilize, but that is wishful thinking.

I buy NIDO brand whole milk powder, 3-1/2 pound can for less than $16 on Amazon. I believe there is a low-fat version, too, but no non-fat.

I use mostly almond milk but occasionally want some dairy milk for certain things. I keep a quart of shelf stable whole milk on hand. Keeps a long time in the pantry and tastes exactly like fresh-from-the-cow.

I HATE fresh from the cow milk, as it smells exactly like the cow itself!

My farm grandma strained both buckets of fresh milk thru 2 different cheesecloths after each milking, and regardless of how cold it was, it still reeked of cow.

I had a hard time drinking fresh milk as a child, and would always ask for water, koolaid, or fizzies with my meal. I took the bait if the milk was heated with cocoa, sugar and marshmallows added, but it still had that whiff of cow.

@RedTop I just had a flashback at the mention of Fizzies. I wonder why they disappeared and why someone doesn't bring them back? I'd buy a crate if they would.

@RedTop I understand....as a child I was so sensitive to the smell of eating an animal/animal product. Decades later, I'm still the same only more so. I felt compassion for the animal, as soon as I was aware of what was on my plate.

Fizzies were taken off the market due to containing cyclamates, which the FDA banned. The company tried to revive the brand using another type of sweetening agent, but seemed to have lost their following. I liked all flavors!

I'm not a milk drinker so I bought some a few weeks ago and also picked up some for our church's food pantry. I didn't even notice the price until I was looking at the receipt after I got home......WOW!

Nonfat dry milk has always been high. I've worked with some local food collections for a long time. This is on our list, and it's the item we usually have to buy to make sure our families get everything. We do get donations once in a while, but only about 5-7 boxes. Sadly, it's not going to get better or easier.

I think I paid a little over $6.00 the last time I bought some. It's been a while. But, I buy it when it's a BOGO at Publix. Hasn't come back as a BOGO for a while now. I'm sure the chain supply has a lot to do with it. I use it for break machine.
