Any reason I shouldn't use dumplings rather than potatoes?

I'm making beef stew today. DH doesn't care for the texture taken on by potatoes in a stew, so I usually serve it atop mashed potatoes. Today, however, I was thinking I'd make dumplings instead. Am I missing something? Is there a logical or textural reason I shouldn't use them?

My dumpling recipe is from Ree Drummond. I've been making her chicken and dumplings recipe for years.

1 1/2 c all purpose flour

1/2 c yellow cornmeal

1 heaping T baking powder

1 t salt

2 c half and half

fresh chopped parsley

I don't like my veggies cooked in with my meat, I cook it separately

Sounds good to me. I make dumplings once in awhile and I always use my grandma's recipe:

One egg

Softened butter to match the size of the egg

Beat with a fork - it will be chunky

Salt and pepper if you want

Use enough flour to make them the density you want.

Drop into whatever you are making, soup, stew, ...

Of course this can be doubled or tripled depending how many you want. Enjoy your meal!

My grandma came through Ellis Island. She knew how to stretch a meal for a big family.

I love the dumplings. Not a stew fan but I do like the broth and dumplings.

How about biscuits? Never had dumplings as a kid b/c my mom hated them.

She made the best fluffy biscuits.

I think dumplings would be great. Nice change from the other carbohydrate, the potatoes.

I LOVE stew (a really thick good stew) over biscuits! That's my favorite.

OR how about those really thick wide egg noodles?

As @Sooner mentions, I have used wide egg noodles in my beef stew. Never have tried it, but I don't see why dumplings wouldn't be a good alternative to the noodles.

@house_cat I've made the steamed, biscuit-like dumplings with beef stew for years. I didn't know it was a unique idea. Dumplings just seem like a natural with stew for me. I love them and stew is the perfect excuse to make them.

@BlueFinch What I consider stew would never have enough juice in it to cook dumplings. I guess my stew is more of long cooked food that has "gravy" around it!

If you're talking about drop dumplings they should be fine if you have enough liquid.

I vote for dumplings:

1 cup flour

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 cup sour cream

1/2 cup milk

1 tbsp vegetable oil

Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in bowl. Stir in sour cream, milk, and oil until just mixed.

Drop teaspoonfuls into onto top of hot stew. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

I always add the potatoes after cooking the other veggies so they don't get that 'texture' from over cooking. Learned this from my son.

Thanks, everyone. I'm just getting back to this thread because the day really got away from me. I did make the drop dumplings and they were very good. I would defintely do it again.
